I was just going to post this.

I am very hopeful that with the full strings section they will do a modified "St. Peters Strings" version of Lights of Home.  That would be...extremely welcome.

It's an hour, so use a 90 minute tape to be safe.

Full orchestra at their disposal.. any predictions on the set?
Possibilities that seem obvious.. string version of lights of home. HMKMKMTM. Summer of love. One. MS. Can't think of that many string heavy songs and doubt they will play all of the above... they will want to plug the singles from SOE. Maybe some reworked versions of the classics to include strings?

If anyone wants a warm up before the 19th, I came upon this on Amazon video while searching their catalog to see what U2 goodness they may have.

https://www.amazon.com/U2-At-BBC-Bono/dp/B076MPDDTQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=instant-video&ie=UTF8&qid=1513254452&sr=1-2&keywords=u2 (https://www.amazon.com/U2-At-BBC-Bono/dp/B076MPDDTQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=instant-video&ie=UTF8&qid=1513254452&sr=1-2&keywords=u2)

This is "U2 at the BBC" from 2009 in support of NLOTH.  It is a different format and produced show then the current version of "... at the BBC," it is a decent  hour worth of performances and interviews.  I, for one, had never seen any of this.  Worth a watch!

(Free if you are an Amazon Prime member... other wise I guess one would have to pay to rent it.)

I watched it and it was fine. Some nice versions. I didn't think Bono's voice was in top form and I thought that version of All I Want is You should absolutely, 100% have been included in the show over some tired standards like Beautiful Day. Also, too many commercials leaving the interviews cut too substantially.

Opened with Beautiful Day, then Lights of Home, With or Without You, Get Out of Your Own Way, One and Love is Bigger.

Interspersed with about three brief interview segments and a tour of backstage at the JT Tour in Brazil. Of the 60 minutes, easily 14-15 were commercials.

If UK'ers are getting an extended version with no commercials, I want that one. Full orchestra at the BBC and you cut All I Want is  You? Poor choice.

Cool, I've always wanted to hear WOWY with an orchestra.  At this point I think it's safe to say, as has been mentioned elsewhere 563,789 times, the band is on a mission to make people think they only ever wrote 7 songs: WOWY, One, Streets, Vertigo, SBS, Still Haven't, and BD.

Really looking forward to this. I'm not sure what else will be in the 15 minute extended one on 28th. Would fully expect All I Want Is You to be played tonight. Of the newer songs was hoping for Little Things.

Its true, U2 rarely if ever play interesting songs live on TV anymore. Have they done some research saying that non fans love Beautiful Day that much. Funny my falling in love with U2 moment was when they performed at the Brits in 2001. They played Beautiful Day then too! But it was Until The End Of The World which grabbed me.

So true. Their constant, repetitive song choices do a disservice to their amazing and varied catalogue. True story: I once sat beside a group of four girls at a U2 show who only knew Beautiful Day. They even asked me what song it was when Pride was played.

Get Out, Lights of Home and Love is Bigger were really great. Makes u wish Love is Bigger lasted a bit longer on the album. That end chorus is just epic and such a triumphant anthem. Should be amazing live.

That was an excellent show. I really think Bono is sounding great at the moment.

The new stuff stood up better than I expected alongside the classics, Lights of Home I really enjoyed and it's one of my lesser tracks on the album, GOOYOW was great. The old stuff all sounded excellent, Love Is Bigger was good but for me if I had to pick a poorest of the show it would be that (and I'm not a hater of the song, I prefer it to Lights of Home on the album).

Guessing AIWIY will be on the extended then, which I look forward to.

I'm probably in the minority, but just felt the new songs were underwhelming and had no bite to it compare to the older classics and believe me I'm sick to death of BD, WOWY and One and wish they would bury these songs and many other for a while but had to admit they had more bite and more richer sounding than these new songs.  Even YTBTAB and American Soul just don't have that live impact as even the SOI songs when performed live.

I even think the SOI songs like Miracle of Joey Ramone, Volcano, California, Cedarwood Road, and Raised By Wolves are better live songs and have more teeth and bite to them.  These SOE songs live are just falling flat for me live.

Another thing that is annoying, is the megaphone. Someone please tell Bono to drop this megaphone thing when the tour starts.  It's soo annoying.
Title: Re: U2 @ the BBC - December 19th at 9pm
Post by: mc on December 20, 2017, 07:07:03 AM
Agree with the megaphone thing. Was cringeworthy. From looking at the band last night I would now say this is their last album. They look empty. I am thankful for Little Things, but the new music is just not interesting. The best U2 songs have a beginning that leads to a climax. Most of the new stuff starts and ends the same without going anywhere which unfortunately makes it boring to listen to.

I really enjoyed it but for ...
... the new songs lack a certain oomph live at the minute. Maybe they'll grow as they get played more.
... Bono's voice was ropey on the big woah ohs of With or Without You
... One sounded great until he started with that blooming megaphone! Not in One please. Not in One!

I actually mentioned to my wife that Bono seemed to try more than he usually does, but you need to remember he recorded WOWY 30 years ago and to do that song that well as a 50+ yo dude after screaming it and so many other songs for as long as he has, bravo!

This episode would make a nice and tidy little subscription gift for 2018. Has plenty of classics in new arrangements, recorded in the best sound studio in the world according to Steve Albini and has a healthy mix of JT/SOE songs which are contemporary.

I agree - he went for it and his voice is still standing up.  There's even a bit of change of register.  He's the wrong end of 50 and still holding it.  I think his voice has a certain amount of richness of soul in it now.  If he sings like a broken man, then all the better.

Still haven’t seen everything but watched some clips that have appeared on YouTube. The newer songs like GOOYOW and Beautiful day sounded fantastic. I didn’t feel Bono sounded good on WOWY. He’s still a great singer, maybe better than ever in terms of interpretation, but there’s no denying his voice has lost power and range. When he does an old song like WOWY I hear the original playing in my head so I feel disappointed.

i'd agree with the old warhorses being brought out for the umpteenth time. I'm pretty sure all of them must get tired of belting out BD, etc one for the 2012402194th time but because they are too scared of alienating the mainstream audience with the deep cuts from their rich catalogue. For those new u2, there is so so so so so so much more to them than the staples of one, bd, wowy, siamycgoo,,if only the yet to be converted would dig deeper, they would find a rich tapestry of great great songs.

Lights of home sounds absolutely epic with the strings, that version should have been on the album....

The problem is, good and all that the performances were, nobody saw them. 1.4million viewers tuned in, even though it was a prime time slot on BBC1. U2 just aren't a big draw in the UK anymore on the small screen at least.

Thought it was all a bit meh...

I agree with Bono - the orchestra thing was self-indulgent. It didn't add anything significant to any of the tunes apart from All I Want Is You obviously - and even then it didn't add anything because the orchestra was always there anyway.

It also lacked a bit of momentum with each song being followed by an interview segment, which brings me to my next gripe - Cat Deeley's interview. That was so anaemic and went over so much old ground. Like, imagine, they were formed when Larry put a notice up in their school. Who knew....?!

I actually though the Brazil footage was good and it was interesting to see behind the scenes but the music left me largely unmoved I'm afraid....

However 1.4 million is more that you'd get at a series of shows.  And that's per 'household' so maybe make it up to 2 million in reality.
I&E run in London had approx. 120K, Glasgow probably 50-60K, Belfast 40K - so say 200K in UK for I&E tour
TJT17 had around 120K for the two nights in London
So viewing figures aren't bad considering this is a rock band and not a soap opera or costume drama.

That said, if you go over to TalkU2, you'll find one of the UK based mods didn't watch it live and recorded it as they were not in at the time apparently.

Yes I was going to ask — do you get ratings in the UK that take time-shifted viewing into account? Here in the US only a fraction of the audience watches live.

Time to shut these forums down again. People are just miserable. Who cares about ratings... and how Bonos voice is not the same as 1987 etc etc. I mean can you just enjoy the performance for what it is.

Everyone picking out the negatives all over again.

Beautiful Day: Not bad, kind of boring.
WOWY: awesome. period
Lights of Home: Best song on SOE in my opinion. Was looking forward to this the most and did not disappoint.
One: Pretty good. Megaphone unnecessary.
Love Is Bigger: Didn't like it on the album and definitely don't like it live. I don't get it.
All I want is You: Perfect

Sidenote: Nice to see Edge without the headset mic. I get it that it's a convenience thing but it's so lame.
happy holidays.

Don't shut the forum down

THE SHOW WAS GREAT and worth doing something similar again (please pick a different interviewer though).

I'm over it. My time spent with Chris Gaines changed me.

Surely that is the whole point of a forum, to allow people to express their own views and not necessarily toe the line.

Absolutely loved this show. U2 doing what only U2 can do. Great passion. Great ability to find so much emotion in their music. All band members sounded brilliant. They really are in a league of their own

They seem re-energized and re-invigorated now.  It's been a while since I've seem them like this, probably the last time was during the All that You Can't Leave Behind period, which carried over into the Atomic Bomb/Vertigo period.  I'm glad to see that they still have it in them since they're getting older and inspiration isn't coming as easily or quickly as it once did, which is a natural thing, sadly.

On the viewing figures thing, I read elsewhere that Harry Styles did a similar "at the BBC" and got the same audience figures, beaten by Bargain Hunt apparently....

28'' inch waist, skinny git

Ha. I guess I haven't fit inside 28" since my early teens! Yet again, I have a few inches on Larry too, so different proportions anyway.

i'd agree with the old warhorses being brought out for the umpteenth time.

Literally every message board for bands with 10+ albums says the same thing. They probably wouldn't play them unless they enjoyed performing them and the songs connect with people.

It could be a Prince or Soundgarden situation nowadays, you know...

I think I'm finally at the age in life where I simply don't give a flying f#$% what other people think about anything at all anymore.

I just don't have the energy anymore to give a $#!t.

If I like it then that's all I care about...whether it is the SOE album, The new Star Wars film, this BBC performance...I loved them all and I keep re-listening/re-watching them over and over again with a smile on my face. If you don't like it or even if you love it...doesn't matter...cuz meeza don'ta care.

Is there a way for me to watch the 75 minute of this if I'm in the U.S.?  BBC.com says that its player only works in the U.K.

I would love to see this too.  I am surprised the entire program hasn't showed up.

I just found this excellent performance of there is a light on youtube so the rest must have been recorded by someone.

Its odd that the Extended version didnt feature "Youre The Best Thing" or "All I Want is You". or the video of them in the record store, choosing records.

I think All I Want Is You looked like the perfect closer.

I can see this getting a limited edition release with SOE around about the time of the UK shows.
