Title: Which do you like better: Zooropa or Pop?
Post by: andrewau2 on April 16, 2017, 05:44:01 PM
It's a tough choice for me.  Zooropa has Lemon and Dirty Day while Pop has Mofo and Gone...

Had to go with Pop because it has more strong moments than Zooropa.

While the song Zooropa is perhaps my favorite U2 track ever, I had to go with Pop. It's a stronger album overall.

Pop - but we are measuring 2 of what I consider to be u2's top 3 albums and both are great.

Impossible.  I love both these albums beyond measure, but I choose Pop.  I mean, Discotheque, Mofo, Do You Feel Loved, Staring at the Sun, Gone, Please, Wake Up Dead Man.  But I mean, Zooropa has the title track, Numb, Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car, Lemon & The Wanderer.  I feel like (at least at this moment) the tracks on Pop that I love, I may love a little bit more than those on Zooropa.  Nonetheless, I love both and I need both.

Pop. Zooropa is great, my third favorite U2 album, but Pop much stronger overall. Outside of the title track, Zooropa doesn't have a Mofo or Discotheque.

I love Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car, but it doesn't touch either of those songs I mentioned. Mofo is one of the most "out-of-this-world" sounds that U2 have ever created and Discotheque is just badass and grooves like hell.

People here love that clip of POP before POP existed, with the previous versions of some songs. Well... I believe that's how those songs would have sounded if they were in Zooropa.

Come one, it's an album that begins with the track Zooropa and finishes with Johnny Cash, and everything in the middle is raw, alive and sophisticated. It sounds like sushi with good wine.

The ending of Daddy has a lot more buzz, dirty, heavyness and layers, it makes you feel like a rusty robot being kicked at a party in the junkyard. That's what I call "out-of-this-world".

Pop was the album that opened my eyes to U2 in 97. But Zooropa has Lemon, Stay, Zooropa, Wanderer, Dirty Day. I mean i can never hear it enough.

I have to vote Pop. Without ZooTV/AB Zooropa may not stand up as an album that has its own identity. POP is a horrible, snarling bully of an album, and is better for it.

Not a huge fan of either...but I would vote for Pop over Zooropa.  I am still not sure how to place Zooropa in the U2 canon...it kinda stands alone to me as something completely different than anything else at all.  I have trouble connecting with much of Zooropa to be honest...some of the songs have a cool beat and sound, but I don't identify with them the same as War/TUF/TJT.

Hard decision. It depends on which time of the day you ask me. I prefer Pop early in the morning to get some energy. And Zooropa after a long day to relax a bit. To make the choice between the albums I'll look at the times I played it last months, and then it's clearly Pop.

Zooropa has quite a low-fi sound which puts some people off I think..
But it was their first album where they pushed themselves experimentally to the limit in a very ballsy way.. Yet it also produced their last truly great ballad with stay, one of my favourite u2 "rock" songs with dirty day. Then there's zooropa itself which to me is like nothing I've heard them attempt before or since and seemed very ahead of its time.

Pop seemed more of its time even if it was still experimental for u2 and incidentally.. a great record. But I'm going with Zooropa..vorst sprung Dirk technique

Jesus this is tough. At the moment I'll go for Pop. Probably because it turned 20 recently and I've been giving it a really good listen. Gone and Last Night On Earth my current faves from that.

Overall I'll go for Zooropa. I think it comes down to personal preference at the end of the day but for me Zooropa just did it for me. Would listen to that album when walking into uni for final exams and did the same for my masters last year. For them to follow Achtung Baby with that less than two years later was some achievement.

90s U2. What. A. Band.

I had to vote for Pop (2 votes ahead now!). That album had such a deep impact on me as a 14 year old boy, I've spent the last 20 years trying to find music that gives me the same buzz that Pop gave (and still gives) me and nothing else compares (though to be fair, some bands have come very close over the years!).

I do LOVE Zooropa though, particularly the title track, Lemon, Some Days, Dirty Day and The Wanderer. I still remember the first time I heard the album though and it was a definite WTF moment  :o My first U2 album purchase was 'Rattle And Hum' and I was impressed enough as a young boy to investigate further so I borrowed 'Zooropa' from my local library- The album artwork and the music really confused me at the time, where had the cowboy hats gone and why was Bono singing about washing up liquid? It makes a lot more sense now though  ;)

Zooropa and Pop are both my favorite U2 albums, it really depends on the mood I'm in. Zooropa has an ambient and more comfortable sound than Pop, but Pop has arguably slightly stronger lyrics and themes, in my opinion. It's a little grittier as well.

I think this online version is some sort of a scan of the magazine version, because when this was published, there was no internet.  ;)  And maybe the paragraphs got lost along the way (?)

I would have to check the hard-copy version, which is somewhere in the basement, with all the other U2 related mags I collected over the years.

There's nothing as good as Lemon on Pop, but overall Zooropa feels a bit sparse compared to the two albums which sandwich it (AB and Pop).

I'd say there is an argument for Lemon being one of the bands finest moments. It is daring, risky and different as well as sounded mature, deep and carrying a punch.

Arguably for me the moment u2 best meshed together all their different leanings.

Also think it is criminally under appreciated.

Of course, many would say the same about Pop.  Pop will always have nostalgic meaning for me as it was the first album release I was a part of / aware of and anticipated in the run-up (and Popmart was my first tour).  I was became a U2 fan in the Zoo TV era, but was more catching up on the music and not so savvy about news and current happenings.  Zooropa's release happened before I knew it was coming.

But, all that Pop-era nostalgia notwithstanding, I think Zooropa is the better album (and I'm not a Pop hater-  I like it a good bit -just less than Zooropa).  In fact, I think U2 has four "masterpieces,"  JT, Achtung Baby, Zooropa, and Rattle & Hum.

That's a good way of looking at it. Then the mother of Pop would be OS1.

Son of Achtung Baby, because it continues from where U2's experimentation left off. Pop isn't experimental, you can argue that it is for U2, but it is very different from Zooropa.

Great proposition!

It's more the son of AB, but you can feel Pop being born in that album.

I agree, of course Zooropa will forever be linked with AB due to the shared Zoo TV/Zooropa/Zoomarang tours but the break beats and electronica that punctuate Pop are born on this album. Numb and almost all of side 2 could be Pop Lite songs, with Daddy's Gonna Pay having the kind of kick ass beat that drive songs like Mofo and DYFL (just not the lyrics haha).

It's not the most persuasive of arguments but there's enough there for me to run and run and run with this   ;D

Aw man... That's tough.  Pop was around the time of my first U2 concert, and I believe it has some of Bono's best lyrics ever.  But Zooropa is just a TRIP, and I love that there's so many different kinds of songs in one album.  So, gotta flip a coin on this one........ Wow, Pop actually won, haha!  Just realized that those two albums are neck and neck in the poll - it really is a tough choice.

Ha!  Good thought there, although I would put it differently.  I'd say it's the same dude for all three, but at different, progressive stages of life and thought.  Same dude -but one snapshot is his "wild oats" stage (and the relational fallout thereof), another his is postmodern/existentialist stage in the wake of the disorientation that ensued from his wild oats stage, and the third is the jaded/dissilluioned result after the existentialist stage didn't satisfy his angst.  Same dude.    But it's okay, because he recovers and matures and tells you about it on ATYCLB!!

I don't know what you Pop people are smoking, but I don't want any:

Zooropa v. Discotheque
Zooropa

Babyface v. Do You Feel Love
Zooropa

Numb v. MoFo
Zooropa

Lemon v. If God Will Send His Angels
Zooropa

Stay v. Staring At The Sun
Zooropa
(This is getting ugly)

Daddy's Gonna Pay v. Last Night On Earth
Pop
(Streak ends! There's a chance!)

Some Days v. Gone
Pop
(Look out! Pop's hot!)

The First Time v. Miami
Zooropa
(Uh-oh)

Dirty Day v. Playboy Mansion
Zooropa

The Wanderer v. Velvet Dress
Zooropa
(OUCH)

And I'll give Pop an extra win for having two extra songs, but Hold Me, Thrill Me and Slow Dancing count for Zooropa.

So I am going to score this one 9-3, Zooropa. That's a rout.

Title: Re: Which do you like better: Zooropa or Pop?

Discotheque vs. Zooropa
Pop

Do You Feel Loved vs. Babyface
Pop

Mofo vs. Numb
Pop

If God Will Send His Angels vs. Lemon
Zooropa

Staring at the Sun vs. Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
Pop

Last Night On Earth vs. Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car
Pop

Gone vs. Some Days Are Better Than Others
Pop

Miami vs. The First Time
Pop

The Playboy Mansion vs. Dirty Day
Zooropa

If You Wear That Velvet Dress vs. The Wanderer
Zooropa

And if we count Hold Me, Thrill Me and Slow Dancing for Zooropa...

Please vs. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
Pop

Wake Up Dead Man vs. Slow Dancing
Pop

Pop dominates Zooropa 9-3.

I have to say I don't get why Zooropa is so fondly thought of. Pop is a masterpiece. If they had put Hold Me Thrill Me (I know they hadn't quite recorded it at that time) and Holy Joe on it instead of Miami and If God Will Send His Angels I would hold it in higher esteem than JT but not quite AB level. Zooropa definitely has some great moments but Babyface, Daddy's Gonna Pay and the Wanderer aren't for me. The best thing I can say for Zooropa is that I like to listen to it as it is such a different record from other U2 stuff and I do like most of it. I actually have an alternate track listing where I put Salome, Lady With the Spinning Head and Alex Descends on it as those songs fit much better on Zooropa to me than on AB (which they were B sides for) and take off the ones I mentioned above.

It saddens me a lot that U2 seem to cast aside Pop. Maybe that makes it more of an unheralded masterpiece to me as even the band don't realize what they created.

Actually, you've got your timeline wrong on HMTMKMKM. That was a Zooropa-era track that was left off because it was too much of a rocker, and was reworked a little by Edge for the film Batman Forever, which was released in 1995, two years before Pop. In fact, Velvet Dress, If God Will Send His Angels and Wake Up Dead Man also were considered for Zooropa.

There are a lot of issues with Pop. First off, the fact that U2 went back to material from four years prior should tell you one thing. Secondly, the fact that the album was worked on for so long should tell you another. Lastly, the fact that Island had to pry it out of the bands' hands kicking and screaming should tell you even another. Singles were remixed and released rather than the album versions. All that work, and they still didn't like what they heard.

I think the summary of Pop is this: U2 wanted to stretch their sound and audience even further than they did on Achtung Baby and Zooropa, and at the last minute, they got cold feet. They watered down the hard techno dance sound of the album and came up with an overheated mess. Bono had writers' block. Yes, there are good songs there, but from top to bottom, the record is an overheated mess. It is the only album I can listen to and say 'What on EARTH is Bono talking about there?' He doesn't know what he's talking about.

Discotheque and MoFo, IMO, are examples of what they were going for. They stuck to their guns on those two. Please is a more traditional rock song, and a good one. So is Gone. They finally hit on good arrangement for Last Night On Earth while on tour, but again, it was a rock song that bore no resemblance to what the album was supposed to have been.

The rest? Filler. The worst songs they have put on an album, right up there with the two studio fillers on side 2 of UnFire.

Miami is a musically interesting song with sketchy lyrics that actually wasn't half bad live.
Playboy Mansion is a joke that was funny for 5 minutes.
Velvet Dress is supposed to be a sexy song that came out as sexy as granny's taupe pantyhose.
Wake Up Dead Man is a rambling screed of frustration over one riff
Do You Feel Love is a great bassline over nonsense
If God Will Send His Angels. If Hawkmoon 269 got its name from the number of mixes and takes they tried, then this one should be called If God Will Send His Angles 21,155. I think is an example of Bono having a chorus (again, goes back to Zooropa) and no idea how to deliver it melodically or what to say about it before or after. The cut and paste version that ended up as the single is way better.
Staring At The Sun is a boring attempt at psychedelia that again makes no sense and is perhaps the most boring U2 song to ever appear on an album.

So, as I have said probably too many times here, you are asking U2 why they don't celebrate their biggest commercial and critical failure to date. Do you like to go back and re-live your mistakes

Imagine Zooropa if you just added HMTMKMKM and Slow Dancing.

This reminds me, I do need to add ITNOTF and maybe HMTMKMKM to my "disc 2" of Zooropa in iTunes.

Anyway, gun to my head, I think I'd actually go for Zooropa over Pop.  Love them both in different ways, but the atmosphere on Zooropa is cool, breezy, and quirky.  Pop is like a day that's too oppressively hot outside.  It's got some dizzying highs, but is too inconsistent.

Wow, that's a lot.  Mine's just the b-sides and remixes from the released Zooropa singles (minus Lemon, which I never picked up, but whose remixes are on the AB Uber/Unter discs), along with the Numb/Dirty Day ones from the Pop singles.

Miss Sarejevo b-sides?  I put those as "disc 2" of my "deluxe" Passengers set.  I've made every album into a deluxe, 2 disc version, whether there was a deluxe release or not.

Zooropa, since it's more consistent and well-executed than Pop. The other-worldly atmosphere of Zooropa remains pretty consistent all throughout the album and its highs (Stay, Zooropa) are a bit higher than Pop's highs (Mofo, Gone) while its lows (Some Days, Daddy's) are better songs than Pop's lows (WUDMducks, Miami). However, both of the albums are still really good as they are. Personally, they both hold special places for me.

I think its more straight forward than that, The Prodigy released the Fat Of The Land and pretty much changed the dance/rock crossover genre overnight.  While U2 tapping into the genre, The Prodigy were redefining it. Everything else that came after it was always going to come up short.

Pop is in my top 3 U2 albums, but the more I listen to it the more I realise its a dance producers record that U2 added to, rather than a U2 record that the producers added to. The songs were great, the tour was breath-taking but the most positive result for me was that the band continued to evolve and not conform to a stereotype. How that would change.

I'm glad my vote made it a 50/50 split. I find myself listening to Pop way more than Zooropa. I think I like some individual tracks more on Zooropa than I like any one Pop track (Stay, specifically), but I think as a whole I definitely prefer Pop no contest.

see i listened to FOTL last week, twice in fact, and i see the comparisons but it's very vague. i find it has more in common with Bowie's Earthling. I mean Earthling was Feb 3 and Pop was March 3 but you know what i mean.

In the year 2093, Zooropa is still going to be 100 years ahead of its time.

I bought both albums the day they were released.  They're inextricably linked, for me.

The songs were great, the tour was breath-taking but the most positive result for me was that the band continued to evolve and not conform to a stereotype. How that would change.

That's an interesting way to put it. I think it was intended to be a dance producers album with U2 supplying the ideas, but U2 ended up chickening out, pulling it back from the producers and making a mess of it, a few tracks excepted. I think if you had asked U2 six months before Pop was released what it was going to sound like, and then played what actually was released six month later on that day, they would have been horrified. I mean, not to belabor this point, but every time they have released a song from that album -- after the first two singles -- the songs have been tweaked from their album incarnations, and those two singles have themselves been re-worked later.

Please excuse the pun, but they either never found what they were looking for, or else they didn't have the courage to follow through with their vision and backed off.

I guess my point was not to compare them but to give contrast to where the album landed compared to where The Prodigy had set the bar following FOTL. U2 gave it a good go, as did Massive Attack with Mezzanine a year later, but FOTL is still seen as the benchmark for that time (please allow for a huge dose of subjectivity into that statement).

yea Mezz is a great one.

FOTL was the beginning and end of the rock/dance genre really.

Yeah a top album, Inertia Creeps alone is worth buying Mezzanine for.

As for the Rock/Dance genre being dead, I'm not sure it ever had its last rites but the Nu Metal scene certainly strangled all life out of it in the early 00's! The names Linkin Park, Slipknot, and Limp Bizkit still make me shudder!!

There's some decent dance/indy band crossover going on, certainly in the UK. If your interested in that type of thing then you can do worse than checking out bands like Formation, Lea Porcelain and Keroscene to name a few that spring to mind.

ok fair enough. i just meant Prodigy was hyped as the Nirvana of the late 90s, big singles off an album that more of less declared a new genre of music that would take over.

then nothing. at least not in Texas. lol.

Zooropa for me and it isn't close. Pop is probably my least favorite  effort from U2. Zooropa is Achtung Baby's younger, sexier sister. A true high point for the band.

For me their 2 lowest points. Still like individual songs on the albums, about a third of the album's each are truly stunning and i combine them together to make a much better album, combined with a few B sides I think are better. Gun to my head, I choose Pop.

Ha, yeah Spotify is very good for that, and the tracks it suggests you would like based in your listen history is pretty cool too, although it's very easy to call down a YouTube type rabbit hole and end up miles away from your starting position.

I would say that, ontologically speaking, Zooropa is a better album. Better songwriting, better production, better lyrics. All the same, I generally enjoy listening to Pop quote a bit more. While Pop is a far from perfect album (I'm pretty damn close to saying that Zooropa is perfect), it has a more raw, adventurous feel to it. In a sense, we know that this isn't true: Zooropa was recorded in breaks on the European ZooTv tour, initially planned as an EP, before it blossomed into a full LP; and, that Pop is likely the genesis of where U2 started to second-guess themselves, as is evidenced by some of the original versions of some of the Pop songs (the Hong Kong sessions on YouTube, or something like that; also heard in the rehearsal of Mofo on the Vertigo tour, as well as their few executions of Discoteque on that same tour).

For all the hullabaloo made of the superiority of the Hong Kong remixes, at least the band released Pop before they had enough time to neuter many of its songs like they did with the Single and Best-of versions. Phew.

Haha. Hullabaloo. Never written that word before.

I think Pop's lyrics are the best Bono's done, taken as a whole.  They are the most personal and interesting (with some exceptions, like IGWSHA).  He spends most of the album opening up and talking about his own fears and frustrations (notably in Gone, MOFO, and Wake Up Dead Man).  And, frankly, the conscious juxtaposition and exploration of the preference for the shallow-and-disposable over the political-and-important (Discotheque, Last Night on Earth, Please) was more than a little prescient.

In terms of bad lyrics, nothing tops "Some Days are Better Than Others".  Talk about banal.

Good point.  Lyrically Pop is a stronger record than Zooropa.  On Zooropa, Dirty Day and The Wanderer stand out for their lyrics, but it's not Bono's finest album.  Some of Pop is very bleak, but given the forum is about assessing authenticity at the moment, I'd say it was lyrically pretty authentic most of the time.

Doesn't bother me those lyrics. It adds an air of flippancy to the record that to me suits the album's off beat, dazed and spontaneous nature that perfectly represents the album as the 'headache' the next morning after the wild night of Achtung Baby that was once quoted of the record (can't remember by whom). It's a weird record is Zooropa that I can't quite pin down but one I absolutely adore.

With you on the Pop lyrics though. Probably are the best words Bono has put on to a U2 record.

Funny thing is, lyrics notwithstanding, that song has really grown on my recently.  It's undoubtedly throwaway, something you'll never hear them do live, but it's just so infectiously fun in a way they couldn't even hope to be in the past 20 years.  Edge's clanging guitar riff, Adam's bouncy, goofy bassline--it just really fits a mood.  Very underrated.

been listening to ZOOROPA a lot lately and it just sounds ahead of it's time.............BONO's voice and the band just sound cool, the vibe off that album is cool and fresh for me even today, and yes ZOOROPA is an epic under rated tune.

The idiots at SPIN wrote this piece for the 20th anniversary. I wonder what would be their vote between Zooropa and Pop...

U2 bashing always creates a buzz, sometimes they bring it on themselves but in this case clearly it was to get a reaction from it's fan base.

Zooropa. I love every track apart from the final song. I substitute that with Oh Berlin and it's the perfect album! I really love Pop too though, although a couple of the songs on it I'm not crazy about. It's such an eclectic album though. So many different styles on it and it's so inventive. Zooropa is my joint second favourite U2 album (along with The Joshua Tree). Achtung Baby being my number 1 favourite and Pop, therefore is my 4th favourite.

90's U2 - can't beat them! :)

Wanderer is an amazing song!

I've never been that keen on it and (for me) it doesn't fit in with the rest of the album, it feels completely out of place on it. On a Johnny Cash album it would be fine, I'm sure. The song spoils the mood of Zooropa for me, but that's just my own taste. I know it's a popular song with many. I love hearing Oh Berlin at the end, even though I know it wasn't recorded for Zooropa. It just sounds good with the other songs. :)

The SPIN article speaks negatively of the zooropa album but then says it's hard not to be nostalgic for it. It criticizes lemon before praising it, then praises numb, some days, stay and zooropa itself. It describes the back half of the album as being less than the first half but then says it compares to the Joshua Tree in that regard. It is on the fence about the wanderer - so overall it's hard to see which parts of the album inspired such a negative review. They mention 6 of the albums 10 songs in either positive, neutral or half and half tones. I suppose they truly hated daddy's gonna pay, baby face, dirty day and the first time ....

i'm thrilled to see Zooropa being seen as equal, it's definitley the one i prefer.

I will say the front half is stronger than the back half but honestly up until SOI i'd say that for all their albums. Sure the back half shines in most all cases but no one's gonna say Zooropa specifically has a back half that's on par with the front.

Zooropa for me. Even though I love Pop. I have fantastic memories listening to that album and going to see the Zooropa tour at Wembley in '93. 91 to 97 U2 were at their musical peak as far as I was concerned. God I miss those days!

I think Pop is a much better album than Zooropa and in my opinion one of the strongest in U2s entire back catalogue. I gave it a few spins about a month ago and I was surprised to find out how well it holds after 20 years. In fact I think it would probably be even better received in the current music climate even though a few small tweaks might be needed. Zooropa is a nice EP-like album but with the exception of Stay and the title track it doesn't even come close to Pop's diversity, sound richness, grooviness and song writing complexity. Discotheque, Mofo, Staring at the sun, Gone, Please and Wake up dead man are among the band's best songs ever. Why the band never plays those superb tunes and torments us with the very mediocre output of the post-Pop era instead is beyond my understanding.

Unfortunately people often dismiss Pop without even giving it a fair chance, whereas they get overtly excited by the bland and poppy follower (All that you can't leave behind). Having said that, I also like Zooropa but it doesn't compare to Pop imo.

I used to dislike POP when it was released but started listening to it a year back (http://forum.atu2.com/index.php/topic,29695.0.html) and liked it a lot better. It has 3 songs that I do enjoy as much. 9/12 So kind of a 75% score for me.

Zooropa, I love the first 5 songs, just great, then 4 massive stinkers and then The Wanderer with Johnny Cash which is great. 6/10 so 60% score.

Weird though, the first 5 songs of Zooropa I like better than all songs on Pop except for Starting at the Sun.

Tough choice. Not sure how to swing this, I think I will decide on a Hybrid and this would be my Zoopop album

1.   "Discothèque"
2.   "Do You Feel Loved"
3.   "Mofo"
4.   "If God Will Send His Angels"
5.   "Staring at the Sun"
6.   "Last Night on Earth"
7.   "Gone"
8.   "The Playboy Mansion"
9.   "Zooropa"
10.   "Babyface"
11.   "Numb"
12.   "Lemon"
13.   "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)"
14.   "The Wanderer" (featuring Johnny Cash)

Guys, have you ever just had an epiphany were you're like "YES! this is true!".  I have spent the last few days with Zooropa and Dirty Day has shot up into my top 10 U2 songs.  I don't know what it may have displaced but I am SO feeling this song right now.

Dirty Day is an interesting track; very dark with great lyrics and nice build up; the from father to son section is just wonderful, the way it breaks the whole tune, just brilliant. In fact I find the live version even better that the live one.

Zooropa has the stronger songs (Zooropa, Lemon, Stay) but POP is a little bit more solid in terms of it's overall impression. I feel like Zooropa really drops off and feels unfinished whereas POP is a bit more complete.

Lol I'm not saying POP isn't unfinished as well (as they admit), but it feels more considered and less improvised and patched together with snippets near the end like Zooropa does to me.

Zooropa personally, although Pop has grown on me A TON. Once Zooropa got going it didn’t let up until the very end, while Pop has a few dips in quality. Also, Zooropa has a sound that carries throughout, while Pop doesn’t really have sound or theme, if you will, like their other great albums, and doesn’t flow as well as a cohesive project. Pop is great, but is more flawed than Zooropa

Wow, that's a tough one I never thought about before.  I've always thought of POP as the band's apex (not crowning achievement, just apex) and never thought of comparing it anything else.

I like the conceptual ideas of POP better than the conceptual ideas of Zooropa.  I like the imagery and aesthetics of the whole POP phase better than those of Zooropa.  I like the Zooropa cover better than the POP cover, though they're both a little tacky.  I like how Zooropa captures the zeitgeist of its time better than POP.

But I like listening to Zooropa all the way through more than listening to POP all the way through, so: Zooropa.

I think.

I'm kind of new here so I'm not totally sure how to reply. I really enjoy both albums. However, Zooropa only has one song I love (stay). The wanderer, Lemon, Zooropa, and Dirty day are all very good songs. The rest of it is average at best. Pop has great songs, but If you wear that velvet dress, The playboy mansion and Miami are so bad they almost ruin the album for me.

Velvet Dress is kind of like Promenade. It's a great little song but it lacks enough meat to really give it any real value unfortunately. That's just my opinion. I know if Promenade had an extra verse and was maybe a minute longer I'd like it a lot more. Same with FEZ Being Born.

I love both albums but overall I think Zooropa is my favourite. I love the album, apart from The Wanderer (not keen on the song itself and, with Johnny Cash singing it it's just not a U2 song to me). I add HMTMKMKM to the album (halfway through) and replace The Wanderer with Oh Berlin and then it's the perfect album for me!

With Pop I remove the 3 songs I'm not keen on (IGWSHA, TPM and WUDM), add Holy Joe and Your Blue Room and then it's also a perfect album for me! :)

Oh and I ADORE Velvet Dress, one of my favourite U2 songs. A real mood piece. :)

The love for Pop on here has always bewildered me. A few good songs, yes (Please is phenomenal) but the triple whammy of Velvet Dress, Playboy Mansion, and Miami ruins the package as a whole for me, just like u2dc said.

Zooropa is definitely a better listen straight through.

That said, I have my own “ZooPop” playlist where I’ve made a single album that actually works for me:

1. Discotheque (Mike Hedges)
2. Staring At The Sun (Mike Hedges)
3. Numb (Mike Hedges)
4. Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
5. Miss Sarajevo
6. Gone (Mike Hedges)
7. Lemon
8. Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me
9. If God Will Send His Angels (Single Mix)
10. The Wanderer (Legend of Johnny Cash version without annoying siren at the end)
11. Wake Up Dead Man
12. Please (Single Mix)

huh? why dont you like WUDM?

I just find it a bit of a dirge, it's never appealed to me. I love having Please as the closing track much more. :)

Closing in on 200 votes. I think this will settle the 90's ranking for good in this forum:

1) AB
2) Zoo
3) Pop
4) OS (if we must)

Achtung Baby
Pop
Zooropa
Original Soundtracks I

This applies to the entirety of U2's canon, as well. Pop is only marginally behind Achtung Baby, and will definitely surpass it when I'm finally ready to concede that it's the greatest U2 album of all-time.

I love Pop and have never understood the bashing it got, even from the band themselves!  But Zooropa is very close to being my favorite U2 album of all.  And the videos are awesome, too!

'Pop' by a mile, for me.  But that could be, in part, due to the age that 'Pop' caught me at.

As an interesting aside, I was recently watching a backstage interview on YouTube which was filmed during the PopMart Tour in which the [Dutch] interviewer asked Bono if they would be incorporating any songs from Zooropa into their setlist.  Bono responded by saying, "You'd probably have to play the whole thing," or something to that effect, meaning that Zooropa needs to be played from start to finish, and that the songs don't really "work" when played individually.  I respectfully disagree, as Dirty Day, Lemon, and the title track, have been played to great effect on prior (ZooTV) and subsequent tours.  I had never seen/heard Bono talk about playing an album live in its entirety before seeing this clip, and this was 20 years before TJT Tour 2017.
