Title: Which part of a U2 song made a shiver ran down your spine?
Post by: NotFadeAway on November 18, 2012, 02:29:35 AM
Okay. This is the first topic that I open, don't kill me! I don't know if it has already been opened before, if so, I'm sorry I couldn't find it.
Well, the point is which part of a song is the most thrilling, exciting, touching for you? It could be just a word sung in a particular way (not necessarily in a high note) or a bunch of chords, or whatever you want!

For me the way Bono sings "sky" in the studio version of Pride as he goes "shot rings out, in the Memphis sky" is just BEAUTIFUL.  The same is when he sings "And so fade...fade...fade away" in the live version of Bad.
Talking about chords I do love the part of guitar in the live version of One, that Edge plays when Bono is singing "One love, one blood...", it makes me cry more that the whole song.

Good thread and thanks for starting it.

I love the song Bad.  The into, lyrics and when Bono sings fade away.

The drums during "she is raging, she is raging..." In Running to Stand Still

Great thread:

A couple of moments for me:

As _acrobat already said: Edge's guitar in Love is Blindness

Larry's drums in Mofo

Adam's bass in Moment of Surrender

Bono's vocals on Kite from the U2 Go Home dvd.

1. When the drums kick in on Where The Streets Have No Name till the first words come in. As far as I'm concerned, that is the greatest bit of music you will ever hear live in concert!

2. The last part of Until The End Of The World live is always incredible. On the 360 show, the lights were amazing here. Bono always does something different, but usually ends with that same old melody.

3. Beautiful Day, the part with " See the world in green and blue ". When it kicks back into the chorus. Awesome.

4. Vertigo, the whole song! But live on the 360 tour, I love the way they added that little part at the end. Watch the Rose Bowl version to see what I mean. The way Bono messed around with the camera was Bono at his best!

5. The last part of Ultra Violet " Baby, Baby, Baby "! I loved the combination of this and the mirror ball live. Incredible!

6. Also Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me, did the same thing at the end with the mirror ball!

7. Edges solo on Even Better Than The Real Thing! The original version. Actually the versions on Zoo Tv Sydney, and Pop, in Mexico City are both great!

8. The intro into Elevation on the U2 Go Home Dvd!

These are actually all U2 Live moments. But really, while U2 is great on record, nothing can beat hearing and seeing the music live.

this. one of the reasons U2 will always be my fav band live is beacuse almost all the songs take it up to the next level live.

Scarlet, absolutely! So short, but amazing!  And this from Unforgettable Fire:

Not a tear, no not I

On the late 360 tour version of Beautiful Day where it goes from the "oh beautiful" to the opening notes on the guitar. It reminds me of how incredible and unexpected the emotions were when I was in the pit and they played that part at the show I was at.

The intro to Streets (in most versions), especially the Sydney ZOO TV DVD.

In Please (live) when Bono is yelling and Edge is going nuts with the guitar in that section that's not in the album version.

A Sort of Homecoming, "Just a screeeeeammmmm... oohhhhhhhh"  Yeah, you know the part.

The outro to With Or Without You, about half-way along when Larry does a fill and hits the crash symbol.

Velvet Dress, the "Sunlight fills my room" part.
Streets, the whole thing, live especially.
Miracle Drug, Edge's singing/guitar solo part "Beneath the noise".
Ultra Violet, studio version, the "I remember when we could sleep on the stooooones" part. :)

Until The End Of The World (Live) - Edge's solo and the bridge section

Where The Streets Have No Name (Live) - Slane Castle. That is all.

With Or Without You (Live) - "Shine like stars", "Love Will Tear Us Apart" snippet at Glastonbury and Bono saying Ali's name before performing at Glastonbury.

One (Live) - "Do you hear us coming Lord, do you hear us call? Do you hear us knocking, knocking at your door?"

Love And Peace Or Else (Live) - Edge's blistering solo

The Fly (Live) - Edge's solo at Glastonbury and the intro at Boston

Love Is Blindness - Edge's solo, Zoo TV

Miracle Drug - The build up to Edge's solo, the solo itself and everything else after it

Fez - Being Born - Bono's first wails as the song explodes around one minute and thirty seconds

Vertigo - Larry's drum-stick clicks at the start of the song

Pride (In The Name Of Love) - The chorus and "Oh oh-oh oh, oh oh-oh oh"

All Because Of You - Edge's blistering shriek of a riff at the start of the song before the driving bass kicks in. Best 15 seconds of any song, ever.

There are lots of U2 songs that can send a shiver, but the first for me is "Streets" from the Rattle and Hum video.  The red background, the intro, the silhouettes of  Adam, Edge, Larry and then there's Bono.  The hat, the coat and those boots.  I couldn't wait for the lights to go on.  Great song.  :)

Opening to Streets live, all the time.

I'm sure there are more I can't think of. Maybe the "Don't turn around..." part of Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses... the "if the mountains should crumble" part of TUF... the "oh's" in WOWY....

I don't get chills that easily, I just really feel the emotion that the band put into all of the examples I gave. Maybe it might seem over-the-top butthat's just how U2 make me feel  ;)

The rap during Moment of Surrender live (especially the Wide Awake in Europe version.)

Very true. I was at the show, actually and definitely felt that "chill down the spine" at that moment (of surrender). Intense.

Also, to me, there is this note and tone Bono hits in One when he sings "same" in "do you feel the same". I'm pretty sure he couldn't make it like that again if he wanted to. That's the sort of thing you have to catch "in the moment".

Slane Castle...

Specifically, the intro of Streets from AIWIY and after Bono completes his lap of the stage.
Out of Control, after the little interlude where Bono talks about the band and thanks the fans and then bursts back into song and the whole crowd goes crazy and the camera pans up. So good.

Oh God, I forgot this part too:

"You run.....SLAM....you run!......SLAM.....you run and not grow weary (take my hand...)" followed by an amazing violin solo. Gorgeous, haunting, and moving.

What a great topic to remind us all how much we love U2 :-*

I could just well up and cry anytime Bono whales such as
Also, that piercing guitar sound in Electrical Storm... I can't even describe how that made me feel.
+ I couldn't believe it when I heard Beautiful Day live... somehow it was the first time I realized how absolutely beautiful the guitar part is during the verses, just blissful :)

Ugh forgot Heartland too.

When he sings that stratospherically high wail near the end of Heartland my arm hair stands up.

The third verse from the song Surrender:

She tried to be a good girl and a good wife
Raise a good family
Lead a good life
It's not good enough
She got herself up on the 48th floor
Gotta find out
Find out what she's living for.

This did not send a shiver down my spine when I first heard it, but it did give me pause as I asked rhetorically, who was Sadie? did Bono know a girl like this in real life? did Sadie jump from the 48th floor? The imagery that this lyric evokes has always fascinated me.

Adding to these many spine chilling moments that are already listed:

The guitar harmonics and vocals during the second verse of New Years Day from Under A Blood Red Sky (the one at Rockpalast).  I always rewind that part.

Edges best solo of all time. It's not debatable.

He wrote the song when he was splitting up from his wife, so much emotion in that solo and the song in general!

There are so many moments, but for me it is the intensity of emotion surrounding Bono and his Dad. When he sang the operatic part in Italian of Miss Sarajevo for the first time it was part of his tribute to his dad that he sang opera. This is connected to the moment in Sometimes you can't make it.... where he sings "You're the reason I sing, you're the reason why the opera is in me, can you hear me when I sing?" That brings a chill to me, because it is such an emotional and real crescendo. The follow up in Milan, with opera being sung in Italian, and the Italian crowd cheering in rapture at the end of the operatic part is the climax of this curve in Bono's life- a fitting tribute to his Dad.

For some reason, no matter how cheesy it is for Bono to sing opera in Italian, even though I can't understand anything he's saying, It's still an incredible moment.

Studio-wise:
Beautiful Day: When Bono starts singing "What you don't have, you don't need it now..."

Live-wise:
The Fly: When I first saw this live back in 2011, I got chills in the middle of that solo at the middle 8. A huge thrill to see something played live that I listened to for so long before that.
Sunday Bloody Sunday: The first time I heard Edge rip into "the riff" back in 2005. Just great.

If I had to give one, it would be any live intro into Streets.

Other songs that get into me are All I Want Is You, Bad, Running to Standstill, Mothers of the Disappeared, Stay, Kite, One, the end of With or Without You from R&H (movie).

Edges freight train solo on all I want is you

The incredible Build to magnificent a solo, it is perhaps u2s crowning achievement if you ask me. The musicality of this song is fantastic, the clever approach of hinting between bonos vocals and the slide solo, they merge into one voice. It's fantastic that whole section.

With or without yous restrained ending.

Bad/40/streets from Boston aka live from heaven
