We're still learning this new software and what it can do, so I thought I'd start a thread for any feature requests you guys might have. We can't promise everything, but we'll do the best we can with the good ideas you folks have.
Fire away below.....
-
I would love two sections: one where we can share U2 stuff like photos, bootlegs, videos, etc, and another one when we can buy and sell U2 memorabilia and stuff.
Thanks!
-
The "previous" and "next" buttons on the bottom right are confusing to me (maybe it's just me). I almost responded to a different post because I pushed "next" instead of the page numbers on the bottom left. Maybe it's just me and my computer unknowledge.
I really dig the new look and features of the forum! Great work!
-
Does the skin have to stay grey, black and blue? Can we change it to pink and yellow and purple if we wanted to? ;D
-
I was thinking it would be cool to be able to create more detailed profiles with information like:
Fan since_______
Favourite allbum/song/band member
First album purchased___________etc
obviously people don't have to disply it if they don't want to but it would be fun to see other people's personal 'history' of u2.
Just a thought :)
-
Yer... I'll second that! ;D

I also agree with this. I thought that it meant next page, not next thread. Even if it said 'next thread' that would stop people from doing it.
-
Also, one other thing...
I don't think people will really find this an issue, but it's just something I thought might would be better.
Once you have made a post that it takes you back to the thread and you can see your post in relation to others. I know you can see this when you are writing, but if there is something that you have forgotten to mention or something...
I dunno probably just stupid, but yer...
-
I'll third that!
-
I'll fourth it? I agree with the idea, but fourthing it just doesn't sound grammatically correct.
-

Heh. :D I can see your point... But I'm fifthing it anyway! ;)
-
I'm sixthing it. :o
Great idea.
-
I suppose we could have several more smilies? ;)
-
I suppose we could have several more smilies? ;)
*seconded*
or at least the option to like import our own and save them so our profile can use them? and then if on the forums someone says... 'hey fan x - i love that smiley' we have the option to send it to them?
what if i say please? ::) 8) :-* ;D :o
-
seventhing it even tho i was the one to second it ::)
m2/admin... u out there?
this seems like a genuinely awesome idea and no one is responding... man i wish I had a smiley that cried, but coz its the @u2 forums we dont have good forums.
wait, what's that? @u2 has a new forum? new smileys? SWEET
:'(
-
Personally i'd like a drooling and an excited smiley. :D

We're out here and keeping up with things. We are collecting the ideas as a group and we'll take a look at them. We won't be jumping into every thread to respond to them right away. :)

sorry, my bad :-\
-
I also think this is an awesome idea.
-
More U2 avatars, lots of them to choose from !
-
I think it's a cool idea, but I don't know what this forum software is capable of and what it's not. It's open source software, so there's a chance someone else (a regular Joe Blow) has written some kind of plugin that expands profiles ... but I'd have to find that plugin, hope it's not vulnerable to being hacked, figure out how to install and activate it, etc. :)
I think I'm gonna combine this thread in with the Feature Requests thread so we keep everything together.
-

Hi ChoriU2 -- thanks for the idea, but we really want the forum to be about conversations and chat. We don't want it to become a marketplace or the classifieds or anything like that. Plus, then we'd have to deal with complaints about bad sellers, should we hunt them down, ban them, etc., etc. Just doesn't seem worth the headache.
If you're looking to buy and sell merchandise, I'd suggest the CollectU2 list on Yahoo Groups. Lots of collectors on there.
-
The "previous" and "next" buttons on the bottom right are confusing to me (maybe it's just me).
Yeah, they were to me, too. I'm pretty sure I can remove them in the admin. You guys want me to, or have you gotten used to it?
-
Does the skin have to stay grey, black and blue? Can we change it to pink and yellow and purple if we wanted to? ;D
I think there's a way to let users change the "skin," but the problem becomes that we then have to support lots of different designs.
User: "Matt, we can't find such-and-such feature in the new skin we just picked. Can you help?"
Me: "You're crazy if you think I'm changing my skin to the Hello Kitty theme so I can find it for you!" :)
-
Also, one other thing...
I don't think people will really find this an issue, but it's just something I thought might would be better.

I dunno probably just stupid, but yer...
I'm pretty sure you can change that in your profile. I know as soon as I post this message, I'm sent to the end of the thread where my post is. Is that what you want it to do? I think you can set that yourself.
-
I suppose we could have several more smilies? ;)
I think there's a way for us to add new smiley sets to the options. Don't know where to find them or how to do it, but we'll look into it at some point.
-
Thanks, m2! We appreciate all the hard work you guys do for this place... :D
-
Thanks m2. ;)
-
I thought I'd mentioned this elsewhere but I didn't see it so I'll say it (again?).
A link back to the @u2 home page. Or does this already exist and I'm an idiot.
-
Hey! I was thinking that we could have a games thread? Kinda like the one on this meaaage board:
http://benjimaddencom.proboards35.com/index.cgi?board=GameBoard
I can start a few off, as thats all I did my my crazy message board days :P ::) :P I think it is a good idea because it is fun and it gives people (like me) who are bored something to do and rack up their posts!
Oh and that board above has been dead for a loooooooong time :'( I used to enjoy it there
-
Thanks for getting rid of the porno post yesterday. You guys are fast! I don't expect the forum to be G-rated, but my kids like to come here from time to time to talk about the band. Anyway, thanks for being so responsive.
-
I am responding to this rather late but I just noticed it. A more detailed profile would be really nice. Each member can choose if they want to share more info. or not. It would be a nice feature. m2 and moderators, thank you so much for a great forum. The other U2 forums are just not nearly as nice.
-

We do our best and we appreciate when posts that are out of line are brought to our attention via the Report to Moderator option as that helps us see it faster.
We are currently looking into reasonable options to cut down on the spam we do get.
-
Perhaps someone mentioned this one already.
Is there a way to have an option with quoting, where you can either quote the post with all of the quotes in it, or quote just the post. Did I make it confusing enough? ???
Well, basically, when I quote someone, more often than not I want to quote only the line of the person posting, not all the quotes they included in their post. Some posts have a whole pyramid of quotes and it looks a little confusing.
-
Well, basically, when I quote someone, more often than not I want to quote only the line of the person posting, not all the quotes they included in their post.
As I did here, you merely need to go in and edit what you would like quoted from the reply you are quoting from.
-
Yeah, I do that too, but in this modern day and age, when there is a button for everything, I was just hoping there can be a simpler way than editing other comments. I guess I'm lazy. ;)
-

Don't know if this will help or work, and I know nothing about computers basically but to solve the spam problems you could get a CAPTCHA maybe?
-

Surely even simpler is to have a box with "tick this box if human" next to it; tends to work surprisingly well. Partly because I find CAPTCHAs severely annoying.
Also, would longer commentaries and opinions simply go in the "The Music" section, or could there be a separate section for that ("Reviews and Comments", or something like that)?
-
I suggest we need a multi-quote feature if available, so that people can quote multiple posts and reply to them in only one.
Thoughts?
-
I second that
-
Don't think it's available, but we'll look for that capability. Probably best to plan on doing it manually for now.
-
Ok thanks.

Thanks for asking! I don't know if EVERYTHING on here will be archived, or if some of it will go away, but I would like to be able to be sure that I can go back and read some of the more thoughtful threads even when they die. Is that already possible, and if not, could it be? Even if we just had the function to save it on our computers as an .html file before it was going to expire, that would be fine.
Also, I think it would be cool to have an open field in the profile so we could fill in whatever bio info we wish.
Third, is there a way to show more of the little page numbers. Sometimes I know I want to go ten pages back, and I have to keep jumping back three pages at at time.
Thanks again!

I think the reason why they've done only 3 pages at a time is to give the forum a 'clean' look rather than showing all the pages. It could also be a strategy the moderators came up with to make you look at all pages thoroughly rather than skipping pages.
-
That makes sense, Nielsen. Maybe they could accomplish both objectives if there was a pulldown that shows all the page numbers?
-
Why didn't I think of that :D

Aww :(
Bigger avatars? My poor little Edge. You can barely see his goatee... :(
On the same subject though, for those of us who do like to dabble in computer art, how about a "Creative" section with art/videos etc?

We're certainly not planning to make everything go away. But I can't promise forever. :)

If I did it right, you should see a "Tell Us More" field now.
Third, is there a way to show more of the little page numbers. Sometimes I know I want to go ten pages back, and I have to keep jumping back three pages at at time.
You should now see more page numbers in busy threads/topics/boards.
-
Bigger avatars?
You should now be able to upload 90 x 90 avatars. Old size was 65 x 65.
On the same subject though, for those of us who do like to dabble in computer art, how about a "Creative" section with art/videos etc?
I don't think so. Seems like something we'd have to police way too much, and if you upload them to the forum, then we also have to deal with space and bandwidth issues.
-
Wow! :o Thanks M2! :-*

Thank you for the bigger avs! I hope my art thread I started is OK. :)
-
How about a section for reviews and ratings on albums so we can add links to reviews that we find on each album?
-
You can post reviews of the new album in the News & Rumors section, although I have to think just about every review has already been put there. :)
-
ok thanks for telling me where that was, i couldnt find reviews anywhere, i dont how, are the other album reviews there, not just NLOTH?
-
We have 30 years of news archives in the database, all the albums, you name it....
-
How about thumbs up signs along with the crazy faces, I use thumbs up alot on another forum and wish I could continue the habit on atu2 lol
p.s love the faces, use them alot ;)

Oh yes, thumbs-up/down smileys would rock! ;D ;D and 8)

I love this place, even though I tend to take liberties with the PG rating. An ignore feature would be really nice though.

Hi, I don't know if this has been asked before, but the thread is too long to read it all... :D
Is it complicated to add a "LIKE" button on every comment?
Sometimes you read something brilliant, but you have nothing to "add",
you just want to express how much you liked it... Could it be?
Also, a "DON'T LIKE" button would be interesting ... :D
-

I think Facebook has taken care of that enough, don't you think?
I would like to suggest different skins or themes for the overall forum if it is feasible. Maybe from different colors? Black, multicolored, and the traditional style?
Many thanks in advance.

i think that's a good idea because it will show who agrees and who doesn't
i don't think it'll be as annoying as facebook to be honest ;D

I think the goal here is to draw people into the conversations that they are interested in joining. Personally, I have no use for "like" and "dislike" buttons because they don't add to the conversation in any way.

I'm with you on that one Joe.
Now, about those PM limits any way we could get those upped a bit? I get why they are needed, but can we increase the number per hour?

The new forum doesn't have the option to reply to all when sending personal messages. Can we get that back or is it an anti-spam feature?
-

Strange. My inbox has that feature.
-
How about a mobile version? Maybe you could make the app like the site? Or at least the forum tab on the app? That tab doesn't really do any good since it only shows replies pretty much; you don't even know what they're talking about.
-
The forum seems to work perfectly fine for me on my iPhone. Is there something that's not working on your mobile device? I'm just going to forum.atu2.com in the browser and it's great.
The iPhone/Android app is what it is and won't change in the future. Here's why: Developing good apps is really expensive, like on the order of 5-figures. Needless to say, we don't have that money. About 5-10 readers per year ever make a donation via the Paypal button on the site and we have no ads, no other income. So getting a cool, world-class app just isn't gonna happen when your annual income is about $200.
Now, if more of you want to contribute on a regular basis, or if we decide to put ads on the site (and our readers accept them), then maybe we have some flexibility to do some cool things that require money. But I doubt that's gonna happen anytime soon. We've talked about putting ads here in the forum, and we may do that in the future, but it's not been a high priority.
So that's where we are. Trust me ... our internal wish list is a mile longer than anything that's been mentioned here, but we really can't do much as a non-monetized website.

A few forums offer a "like" feature for posts. It is an available mod for SMF. The feature shows the user who (if any) liked their posts. This feature has a few other subjective benefits... of course to call them benefits is in itself...subjective.
It would eliminate the need for the "+1" replies as well as provide efficient kudos to fellow members who provide exceptional (or populace) content.

On another forum i use it is called 'reputation' and peoples 'rep' score is displayed on their user profile...
For me that would make a good replacement/improvement for the what i think are useless and pointless 'squares' and name things we have here like 'up with the sun' and 3 squares...which are i believe just linked to how many posts a member has made and for some reason in the case of mods and admin they have more squares regardless (one can only assume to signify some kind of 'importance') which in my view is a bit daft....nobody is more important than anyone else on an internet forum and having more sqaures next to your name certainly does not make anyone so....
A 'rep' or liked posts score would be much more useful and relevant about the poster IMO giving a clear view of how that persons contributions to the forum are seen by his/her peers/the rest of the community.
-
Thx an tha. We debated adding that kind of thing a few years ago, but decided
1) it's so easily spammed
2) it opens the door for members who are breaking forum rules to say "oh, but you can't ban me, look at my rep score"
So, no, not interested in adding that. And by the way ...
in the case of mods and admin they have more squares regardless (one can only assume to signify some kind of 'importance') which in my view is a bit daft....nobody is more important than anyone else on an internet forum
Moderators are absolutely more important because they're the ones giving their time freely to try to make sure the forum is an enjoyable place for all to visit. They're the ones with the power to enforce forum rules. If a moderator sends you (or another member) a PM about your forum behavior, that PM is absolutely more important to your future forum participation than any PM you get from a regular forum member.

Thx PDK, we'll look into it. We're planning to go through the available mods soon and see what's worth adding. But like I said above, I don't think we'll be interested in any gimmicky stuff that turns the forum into a popularity contest .... or makes it more of one than it already is. ;-)
-
Thanks M2. I see your point.

If there's a feature in that mod collection that would allow each of us to set a default font for all our posts, I'd love it. :D
Anyway, thanks for listening.

Is it possible to minimize large Quotes? Sometimes there's a large conversation with multiple large quotes and we have all to scroll a lot while we've read them already.
-
We have this at the Live4Ever Oasis forum, but I'd like to see a thread where we can share any thoughts on our mind about U2 and another for thoughts on other bands we like.
