I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a blues musician who DOESN'T "light it up".

actually, it's easy, and I don't think Alvin would've ever referred to himself as a blues musician.

Barry Fey - one of the greatest concert promotors ever! He was instrumental in bringing a lot of the biggest acts into the USA from the 60's to the 90's.

He also was very instrumental in U2's success by believing in them and promoting them. He is one of the producers of Under A Blood Red Sky and he's the one introducing the band as they took the stage for that show.

They have 6 studio albums (8 if you count the two that didn't have Morrison, but they're not worth it).   If you have L.A. Woman, then where you go from there is as follows:

The Doors
Strange Days
Morrison Hotel
Waiting for the Sun
The Soft Parade

Squier inspired multiple generations of kids to pick up a bass, showing it could be a lot more than just a background rhythm instrument. A sad day.

As a more recent poster proposed, speaking about who, where, when we may have seen a passed performer.  For me, Yes was my first concert 9/4/1978 at the New Haven Coliseum.  My older sister and her boyfriend (now husband) brought me to the alternatively smoke filled venue.  I was 16 at the time, my first exposure to such an event and Yes in the round was certainly a memory I will never forget.  The link has photos of the show.  I did not take these, but it is of the performance I went to.

Singer-songwriter Colin Vearncombe, who performed under the name Black, has died at the age of 53, two weeks after being injured in a car crash.  The Liverpool singer's 1987 single Wonderful Life was a top 10 hit around the world.  They used to play this song at half-time at Liverpool and Everton football matches back then.  Brings back memories.

RIP, Alan Vega. Lead singer of NYC punk legends Suicide, dead at 78.

Suicide brought keyboards (along with The Stranglers) and drum machines (pretty  much by themselves) to punk rock back in the mid-'70s. Massively influential, even if so many of the people who followed in their footsteps didn't know they were doing so.

Status Quo guitarist Rick Parfitt has died in hospital in Spain aged 68, his manager has said.

He died from a severe infection after going to hospital on Thursday following complications to a shoulder injury.

Parfitt's musical partnership with Francis Rossi, which spanned five decades, made Status Quo one of British rock's most enduring acts.

He had been due to launch a solo career with an album and autobiography planned for 2017.

Status Quo found global success with hits including Rockin' All Over The World.

Sorry to hear about your dad, riffraff.  He sounds so cool being into the Doors when most people of his generation would've been frowning and getting high blood pressure at the thought of Jim Morrison and the Doors.  You were very lucky to have such a great dad.  I am sure you miss him very much.

Thank you, my friend...I DO miss him. He was a really funny guy, and a pretty decent artist - mostly oil paintings, but also charcoal and pencil drawings. He loved the Doors...he knew almost all the words to their popular songs. It was so much fun to ride around with him in the car. We weren't allowed to listen to rock if my mom was with us, but when she wasn't around, we rocked!

First song i ever recall hearing in my life....over and over, as i played it a lot (my mum had the 7" single), was My Ding A Ling by Chuck. I was likely aged about 3-4 yrs old at the time.
In my house, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and the likes were played a lot...so i heard that music often.
Chuck truly was a legend.....and i mean proper legend...not like in the diluted 2017 way

Chester Bennington

http://jackontheweb.cbslocal.com/2017/07/20/report-chester-bennington-of-linkin-park-found-dead-in-apparent-suicide/

Just about to post same:

Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington has died aged 41, LA County Coroner says.
The coroner said Bennington apparently hanged himself. His body was found at a private home in the county at 09:00 local time (17:00 GMT) on Thursday.
Bennington was said to be close to Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell, who took his own life in May.
Formed in 1996, Linkin Park has sold more than 70 million albums worldwide and has two Grammy Awards.
The band had a string of hits including Faint, In The End and Crawling, and collaborated with the rapper Jay-Z.
Its album Meteora topped the Billboard 200 chart in 2003 and is regarded as one of the biggest indie rock records of all time.
Bennington leaves a wife, and six children from two marriages.
He is said to have struggled for years with alcohol and drug abuse, and has talked in the past about suicide as a result of being a victim of abuse as a child.

It does seem that way. Cornell and Bennington were friends and it's said that Cornell's death hit Chester hard. Seems too crazily timed to be a coincidence.  :(

I didn't listen to LP much past Meteroa, but I will say that album was one of my favorites as a young teenager. Definitely sad news today.

The Chester Bennington news kills me. Linkin Park were one of my favorite bands as a teenager and I still followed them to this day. I would have gone to their concert next week had I not already racked up my credit card with 4 U2 shows when tour dates were announced back in the Spring. I thought with a new album out, I would have another chance to see them as they continued to promote the album.

The last time I saw Chester was when he was fronting STP at my local radio stations yearly festival. He held my hand and sang to me.

This one is hard to swallow.

A moment that almost didn't happen. It was an outdoor show and it started to thunderstorm so they stopped the show for an hour during the changeover before STP came on. My boyfriend wanted to leave and I kept asking him for 15 more minutes. Thankfully they restarted before he got really impatient and left without me.

I remind as often as I can that without me insisting we stayed, that would have never happened. Slash and Miles Kennedy were headlining that night and I also got a setlist from Slash.

They were close as brothers and Chester was overcome with grief. That is true. But, Chester had been dealing with some really horrible emotional demons since he was a young kid. He was a child rape survivor, for starters. Also dealt with his parents divorcing, getting into hard drugs to deal with the trauma he suffered, being bullied so badly in high school that he had to transfer, etc.

It was more likely a combo of everything.

Walter Becker of Steely Dan...rest in peace.  :'(

I was there the night in 1994 when they recorded this. It was the opening song that night. One of their many masterpieces - "Aja":   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_Kx8wZ4Zic

Sad news. I do quite like a bit of Can. I also have the Snake Charmer EP he did with The Edge and Jah Wobble

Because today hasn't been crappy enough, Godspeed Tom Perty.  Please everybody, stop griping about setlists or whatever and smell the flowers and listen to the live performances while you can.

My buddy saw Petty in Philly over the summer and he was so hopped up on some drug they had to whisper in his ear to remind him what city he was in.  RIP, as a child one of the first rock acts I was exposed to

Crap. I first heard U2 on this CD my dad made for me when I was 3. It had some Johnny Cash, some Police tunes, but the last four songs on the CD were my favorite. Woman In Love (It's Not Me) and Mary Jane's Last Dance, both by Tom Petty, and then PITNOL and BD. Admittedly I never got into the Tom Petty's stuff like I did U2's stuff, but I'm still pretty sad, and today really sucks.

What a loss. And just coming off what was probably his final 'big' tour according to him. Didn't get to catch him myself because his local show was the night I was seeing U2 elsewhere. So sad for his fans though.

Not a big Tom Petty fan, but I would be pretty upset IF he was dead.
He isn't dead yet though, so let's hold out.

PS: If he is dead don't tell me, I don't want to have to live in a world without, like 2 or 3 Tom Petty songs!

Now rest in peace Tom Petty.  I posted before he officially passed. #notentirelytruthfulnews.

"He died peacefully at 20:40 Pacific time (03:40 GMT Tuesday) surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends," said his long-time manager Tony Dimitriades (via BBC website).

My top three favorite songs of all time:
1. Woman in Love (It's Not Me) - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
2. Pride (In the Name of Love) - U2
3. Wild Mountain Honey - The Tragically Hip

Someone should check up on Bono
