I like the City Of Angels soundtrack. Barely remember a thing about the movie, but the CD is good. :)

And The Million Dollar Hotel, of course!

I like the soundtrack compositions of Ennio Morricone, so this compilation released on the Rhino label is a good place to start, but I believe it's out of print.

https://www.discogs.com/Ennio-Morricone-The-Ennio-Morricone-Anthology-A-Fistful-Of-Film-Music/release/450187 (https://www.discogs.com/Ennio-Morricone-The-Ennio-Morricone-Anthology-A-Fistful-Of-Film-Music/release/450187)

Stand out tracks include the songs from Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy (with Clint Eastwood) & Once Upon A Time In The West, Una Pistola Per Ring, Il Ritorno Di Ringo, & Il Giardino Delle Delizie; the last one is Morricone's stab at rock'n'roll.

Two of my favorites have already been mentioned -- Pulp Fiction and Trainspotting.  Two other Quentin Tarantino films that I think have great soundtracks are Jackie Brown and Reservoir Dogs.  A few others -- Dazed and Confused, Saturday Night Fever, and Boogie Nights.

I don't know if I'd include Rattle and Hum and The Wall in as purely soundtrack albums, but if they were, they'd be on here too.

There's really so many.  I'd want to narrow it down, though--are you talking about single-artist works (Peter Gabriel's Passion, Vangelis' Blade Runner, etc.), or compilations ("Singles", "The Crow", "Trainspotting", etc.)

i think the single artist ones you're referring to are called scores. might as well just list any that come to mind

Yeah, there was another thread about favorite scores (But I'm too lazy to search for the link), and the same discussion came up about soundtracks vs. scores.

To me a score is a soundtrack of original music by one or two artists, and the music is generally non-lyrical (i.e. The Mission, Braveheart, Chariots of Fire, Captive). Just my opinion. I don't think the definition is black and white though.

for the most part but like Enya appearing on the LOTR soundtrack that's still a score to me.

the line blurs cuz most soundtrack compilations include the main theme from the score to the film as well.
