Title: Which Classic U2 Songs They Should Dust Off For The JT 30 Tour & Why?
Post by: jick on April 18, 2017, 10:41:42 PM
First, I don't want to make this another setlist wishlist thread because people just end up listing down songs, followed by another list, with no one really reading the posts of the other.

Second, I use the term "dust off" so it should contemplate songs that haven't been played in a long time in any tour, or have never even been played before.

Third, I'd like to hear your reasons why these songs should be dusted off or played.

Here's my wishlist:

HEARTLAND - It's supposed to be in The Joshua Tree and is about America, so it fits the narrative of the tour.  If they can't really play the whole song, maybe they can do it in snippet form like how they did Zooropa in the previous tour?

A SORT OF HOMECOMING - I don't know how this first, but U2 just haven't made it part of the rotation in a long time and the entire song and melody really gives an 80's U2 vibe.  Maybe this can be what Ultraviolet was in the 360* Tour - a not-so-famous U2 song that was revived to the regular playlist.

I think it would be cool if they can sing lyrical snippets of some of their songs about U2 places .. like New York and Miami.

For a change also, why not open with a slow burn song?  Virtually all the U2 tours have opened with fast songs to immediately get the crowd into it.  I remember watching a Pearl Jam gig in Manila in `94 (or was it `95), and they opened with Release which started pitch dark and Vedder just singing in one corner as the song slowly started building.  It was trippy in a different way.  Perhaps U2 can play The Joshua Tree in complete reverse order? Or open with Heartland?

Cheers,

J

I know everyone will laugh at this, but I would love for them to do Elvis Presley and America.
My reason? Because I'm unreasonable.

That would be very, very interesting! Kind of song as Zooropa was during IE!  :)

Since they're promoting an album from the 80's, I'd like to see them go back to some 80's songs.  I'll go with:

"Wire," "God Part II," and "She's a Mystery to Me."  Record a proper version of "She's a Mystery to Me," and release it ala "Sweetest Thing" mid summer.

I'm hoping some 80s gems are dusted down. I'd love to hear 11 O'Clock Tick Tock or Gloria in a section of earlier stuff. Electric Co and Out of Control were rotated generally on the last tour so who knows? A Sort of Homecoming would be great if they practice it and get it right. I saw them play it at Slane in 2001 and exciting to hear it as it was, it was pretty ropey.

Please - it's a classic to me, even if not to you  :)
Stay - less nostalgia in the setlist please
11 O Clock - because its great and hardly ever played
God Part II - the bridge between TJT and AB
Crazy Tonight - because the remix version of it is a monster live

Great shout by those mentioning God Pt 2. Using this as a potential dark and moody show opener would be immense. A lonesome Adam kicking things off on the stage laying down an extended beat before being joined by Larry to add to the beat before Bono makes his entrance with a dark and subdued delivery of the lyrics until Edge marks his presence with a rawkus solo kicking life into the song which maintains its energy to the end.

Best we can hope for is for this to open an encore, Streets is a nailed on opener for me.

It would be very cool to see God Part II as a opener. I wish U2 would start opening with heavier songs rather than the typical "rawk" anthem.

I keep having this fantasy/dream/image of Lady with the Spinning Head as an opener (more so as an encore). Drums and bass starts, Edge in the background without lights until the opening riff then full lights on as Bono walks onto the stage. "Here she comes, .....". But alas just a dream.

This is a good choice.  The band has been pretty consistent with what they play from their earliest albums, but somehow this has been missing for forever.  If they opted not to open with Streets, it could even make a good opener.

There's something rather funny and ironic with all this 80's wish. I've heard that, at the time of the original TJT tour, U2 used to think that they didn't have a catalogue strong enough to play stadiums along the TJT songs. Of course, later they would have R&H songs also.

I don't agree with the band (because I love U2's 80s), but I think we'll have a lot of 90s and 00s for them to feel safe with the setlist.

The true greatest hits tour.

Phew, great thread, so many good ideas so far, impossible to choose. Walk to the Water-because it would be a very different vibe to the rest of the show? I like the idea of a slow burn start like The Ocean at The Roxy.

Usually, I am always thinking of what 'special/rare' songs I'd love to hear. They always seems to throw them in every tour. But, this tour is different. To hear the entire Joshua Tree album is mind blowing. Have they ever played an entire album live?

I know the set list is already going to be special, so if they dust off some the incredible songs suggested here-  whoa!

I agree. "She's a Mystery to Me" is such a great song and the version they did during that Brooklyn Vertigo park concert was quite solid. It'd be cool to see it get recorded and introduced to a new generation of music fans. I don't know how well Bono will be able to sing it, though.
