Title: The Fly - Boston

OK not exactly a rare gem...it was on a DVD! But what a performance.

I know it has probably been discussed many times on here but so have most things...

So - Discuss!...

I am a very vocal critic of 00's u2 but this is simply magnificent on every level and against any u2 measuring stick.

Ferocious playing, pure theatre, that pretty plaintive opening, Edge soloing like he has been taken over by the b****** child of Jimmy Page and The Devil! - band on fire. Glorious.

This version is one of the reasons I love working out to the Boston dvd...
I remember the first time I watched it, when this song began, I thought to myself, what the?
But, the rest of the song just ROCKS! The energy is amazing. All four of them are incredible, but Edge becomes one with his guitar on this song. LOVE IT!

LOVE that song and loved hearing it THREE TIMES on Elevation! even the new version! i mean really i'd rather THAT be a setlist staple over UTEOTW

Absolutely fantastic, U2 at their best. Lots to love about this. No Coldplay sound in sight, heavy and lots of attitude, and beautiful start to the song.

Hope this is how they will play it at the AB30 tour. It's happening folks.

Bono performed this one with lots of attitude and abandon. He seemed very loose and in the moment here.

Sorry  but still prefer ZooTV version over all others, although this is v good. Cant fugure out how they managed to make it so dull on subsequent tours though.

Obviously Zoo TV beats everything

This one is a bit processed sounding for my liking.  They got it right on the Zoo TV tour.  Dark, sexy, funky.

yknow the most time passes the more i hold that tour in high regard. saw it 3 times and i def think it was the last time they were firing on all cylinders.

Monster tune, best version by a mile. They definitely took the song to another level.

The Fly is one of those songs they've never quite understood how to deliver live (Zoo TV was okay, but still not quite there, as it lacked "punch"), but they certainly nailed it for Elevation Tour, far superior than any other incarnation.

One of the very last moments where Edge was still "on fire", I believe the spine-chilling intro and the thunderous solo belong to his most memorable performances ever.

agree absolutely brilliant ...... always thought the first stanza could have been its own song

And I agree .... it's hard to walk away when you can have it all

One of my favorite recorded performances of theirs of any song. Edge continung to play his riff through the verses, Bono not playing guitar, and getting rid of the falsetto made it the darkest, most intense version of the song by far. This is probably the single recording Id choose if I had to make the margument that U2 is a rock band.

That is a good point about the falsetto.....for me whilst it works perfectly on record it is less potent live and there is an added intensity/darkness with its removal.

I was at that show. It was the only time I won tickets in my life on a radio station. Was directly against the front rail in between Bono and the Edge. I'm actually in the opening as Bono walks on stage with the camera glasses. Unbelievable night.

That version of the Fly was and still is my favorite version. Partly because I was there but partly because the energy all 4 gave for that song. Amazing.

They had a point to prove on that tour.

The only thing since that performance of The Fly, that has come close to the energy of it, has been IWF, OOC, Electric Co, Zoo Station on the last tour and Gloria

Why that is I don't know. Still great shows though btw

Really great version. One of my favourite songs from one of my all-time favourite albums anyway but I especially love this live performance of it. Really fired up.

Wasn't this gig the one where some fans had some kind of crazy sit-down protest or something, that I read about, or am I getting mixed up with another tour?

It was indeed during Elevation Tour.

If I'm not wrong there was a group of fans sitting down for most part of the show.

They were protesting cause, in their words, the band was allowing certain habitual concertgoers to skip the queue and stay upfront instead of them.

I don't remember the details though

No, it was that certain concert-goers were selected to be close to the stage for the filming of the video, at the expense of others who had waited in line longer and been seen at the front for several shows.

I absolutely LOVE this version!  I have found memories of my father (no longer with us) dancing around the room and cracking up when Bono became the fly on the wall on the screen.  So much energy on this version.  It is the best version of the Fly there is.  Hope some day they bring it back.  Thanks for this discussion.  Love it.

Ah yes, I thought it was that tour. If it was during that actual performance maybe the fans that were sitting down made the band angry and that, in turn, fired them up to give a more frenetic, edgy performance! Lol I too love the "Fly" Bono "stuck" to the wall! :)

I think the version from Glastonbury is better. The solo is better, it has a more frenetic pace, its more like the original. The Boston version reminds me of how Slash would play the song not that that's a bad thing but the Glastonbury version is far superior to me.

Just can't buy that Glasto version is better at all.

I find that performance is flat sonically until it picks up to be fair from halfway until the end but still it just does not reach as high as Boston.

As for being more 'frenetic' - sorry but I can't buy that at all...just about everything about it is for me inferior to Boston from Bono's awkward looking pointless Guitar 'playing' to his delivery....to Edge's solo and verse work.....to the difference in punch and kick from the rhythm section and just the overall intensity - as well as the drama of the performance.

But to each their own of course - it is different opinions that make the board interesting.

The song sounds so much rawer in the Glasto version for a start, way better for me.

What you call raw i hear as flat....it picks up as it goes to be fair...but as I have already acknowledged it is all about differing opinions and is subjective.

Don't let those who can't discuss and debate without becoming rude or agressive keep you from saying what you want to say, riffy.

If someone chooses to come back with 'whatever' and be rude in response to perfectly polite and reasoned posts then the problem is not yours and why should you feel like you can't contribute?...

Isn't this the same concert where The Edge smashed up his rig up after playing Gone?  He was super revved up after they finished it or something...not sure if he's mad or just blowing off excess energy.

According to the font of all knowledge that is wikipedia..

"In fact the whole DVD/VHS although labelled as being from June 6, is actually mixed footage from June 5 and 6, with additional Bono cam footage from June 9."

No idea what is from what night - sure somebody out there probably does!

To be fair i think it has been over played how much he had a 'tantrum' it is one of those tales that gets bigger as time goes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hojTwh7DYw

He slides his guitar along floor after a couple of thrashes at the strings and then kicks air....although by zen edge standards it is virtually turning green and needing a shirt off a washing line territory i suppose!

I just found a video from behind the drum where Edge gets pretty heated with Larry...I would like to think Larry just laughed to diffuse the situation.

around second :15 Edge is on the right hand side of the screen pointing to himself while imploring(?) Larry.

I know that it's been questioned whether Edge's "tantrum" was real...it sure looked real to me.

Funny.
I've read two diff versions of what happened...one, his guitar was not cooperating in some way. Two, there was some sort of fan acting-up going on, a pushing/shoving problem, and it bothered Edge to see this happen. Who knows? I liked seeing him man up and lose his temper a bit!

I just found a video from behind the drum where Edge gets pretty heated with Larry...I would like to think Larry just laughed to diffuse the situation.

around second :15 Edge is on the right hand side of the screen pointing to himself while imploring(?) Larry.

It's funny because I think they did well on that song..
Wow...you don't see THAT very often!

I read before somewhere he wanted to/needed to end the song and Larry didn't get the message - probably makes sense as he is remonstrating with him in that behind the drums vid posted above.

I strongly suspect the audio on that DVD is not all from one performance and not necessarily at the end there the audio that matches what we are seeing...

I think Edge is saying "Why can't I get these Americans to just love POP songs!" (pointing to himself).

And Larry's saying "It's not all on you, man...."

THAT IS IT!!!

The wardrobe crew were supposed to come out with edges leather chaps and police helmet at the end of gone...and Larry stopped them...hence edges anger at Larry.

Case closed.
