Sucks. Good thing I did't travel 20 hours by bus to get there.

I hope it gets rescheduled.

I won't bet on a reschedule, as they leave for South America soon. Poor non-local concert-goers already in STL, who bought flights and hotels.

Huge news.

Wow. So scalpers who bought hundreds of tickets legitimately and sold them for a huge profit will be reimbursed for a second profit, while the thousands who bought from third parties are just SOL?

Yikes.

Yikes.

There is no reason why a fan should have bought a ticket from a third party for a stadium show in STL. Unless of course one has some sort of persecution problem.

Was demand so great in STL that people bought from resellers? 2nd US leg ain't South America.

Not a typical thing for U2 to do. Doesn't sound like a reschedule to me, since they're talking about refunds.

For everyone who would be at the show tonight: I really hope you'll get another chance, or they'll be here again soon in their next tour. :(

In U2 fashion it will be bigger and better than the last.

I have no idea, never been to STL. I guess I'm just used to U2 shows being sold out and having to get creative to get tix.

STL isn't a major market. There has been GA available for weeks.

I think they would if it is understood to be in the media etc. Probably no one in 2017 would risk the hit to their business reputation.

Am I the only one who thinks that this is a very strange reason to cancel a show, for a band that has as much touring experience as U2? It's not like the local venue would be realizing just now that U2 draws a large crowd. This sounds like some sort of threat was made.

LN could open themselves to serious liability if the concert went on and then let out into a protest where there is potential for violence and property destruction. - and someone got hurt.  I think they just can't take the chance.

You have to understand the situation going on. There's not enough police force with the protests going on. There's crazy traffic because of the protests. And sometimes protests themselves become violent. Law enforcement has their hands too full. Not enough enforcement to manage security let alone manage the flow of traffic entering the stadium. I don't know in this day and age if I would attend an undersupervised u2 concert.

The whole city is literally madness right now. People are afraid to drive and go out.

Maximus, you're back!  Good to see you.  Sorry about the show.  Sounds like it was a wise decision though.  Can you go to South America?  Or will you just wait till next year?  I'm sure that's majorly disappointing--so sorry.

Were just middle class folks with 5 kids. Even going to STL is a big deal in terms of money. We work hard and never really get to do anything for ourselves. Yeah it sucks.
Title: Re: Attn: Tonights show in St Louis CANCELLED
Post by: codeguy on September 16, 2017, 10:35:45 AM
As disappointing as this is for fans, it would be irresponsible to move forward with a concert in this political environment without adequate police presence. All it takes is a handful of people to try to turn it into a protest event and there's no way band security could handle it. Last night the police had their hands full and deployed tear gas as protesters were hurling rocks at them.

Not a situation you want to see at a U2 show

U2 could play an hour and half away at the university they can hold over 100,000 people at farout field

But you know I am so done with St Louis as a city we can't do anything right, lost our NFL team, lost a chance for an MLS team, can't even have a concert. This was once a great city, once the third biggest city in the country-- now we can't even have a concert.

How would they get the set/stage built in less than 6 hours on a college football gameday?  Maybe they could do it for a different day but it seems like their schedule is pretty packed in with a trip out west then down to South America.

Bud, I know you're pi**ed so you're not making logistical sense. U2 rarely cancel so it's unexpected. Blame the city and its inhabitants. On hindsight, fans wish KC was AFTER STL so you could hit up STL.

Different note: I was worrying about Brian Murphy and the band security/bodyguards last night. They're breathing a sigh of relief for the band to not even be in STL now. (They fly in afternoon of the show)

They don't need all the bells and whistles; they could just play. I don't blame U2 but our fan base is just as important as anyone else, I hope they find away to make it right

They are too old and tired now to try anything. Band's not even in STL today. I'd say swing down to the stadiuma nd see them tear down the stage, but that'd probably hurt too much.

There's 50,000 u2 fans in town - if they showed up on a rooftop 50,000 wouldhear of it and it would create a worse security situation than the one they were trying to avoid in the first place

Good point.   I doubt it was a threat per se but there will be an attempt made tonight to protest and limit access to an interstate, mall, etc.    With everything else downtown already cancelled, the possibility of a protest being planned at the venue had to have been considered.   I was headed there with my kids this evening.   As disappointed as I am, that isn't something I would care to experience either with or without them, but especially with them.

Just saying James Brown played during race riots in Boston and it calmed the city- I expected U2 to do the same.

There are plenty of venues outside the city that are just as good. Remember it was Bono who said all the instruments and the fancy equips isn't important what's important is the song (before they covered knock on heavens door)

Just show up play 10 songs that's the U2 thing to do

I read several articles and it appears this was not a U2 decision it was a St. Louis one becuase their officers were not able to provide the security and crowd control needed due to being used elsewhere for the protests

I just feel like I have been punched in the gut and on the verge of tears all day. It's just unbelievable that we can't have anything nice in this city. This could have been there James Brown moment. Just so disappointed

Deeply saddened at what has happened in St. Louis and having to cancel our show tonight….I found myself reading Dr. King’s speech from the National Cathedral and asking myself is this 1968 or 2017? - #Bono
“Human progress never rolls in on the wheels of inevitability….we are coming to ask America to be true to the huge promissory note that it signed years ago. And we are coming to engage in dramatic nonviolent action, to call attention to the gulf between promise and fulfillment; to make the invisible visible.” (via #U2 on Instagram)

Deeply saddened at what has happened in St. Louis and having to cancel our show tonight….I found myself reading Dr. King’s speech from the National Cathedral and asking myself is this 1968 or 2017? - #Bono

Very cool.   Thanks for posting.    I hadn't seen that yet.

Sucks. Good thing I did't travel 20 hours by bus to get there.

I hope it gets rescheduled.
I had considered doing the same thing earlier this week...

This is crap!!! My wife and I have looked forward to this for months. We have 5 kids and rarely get to do anything with each other. We have saved and planned for this and now what, so very very disappointed.
I'm very sorry for you and all others who were planning to go tonite. I truly hope they can reschedule for everyone

They aren't rescheduling. The dome is unoccupied. If they were glong to reschedule, they would have and not issued refunds.  In 2011 they postponed dates by a full year and did not issue refunds.

They haven't issued ticket refunds yet- I got my parking refunded today but not my ticket

So sorry, Max.  I believe it would have placed their fans in danger if they had played.  That's not what this band would do.

Maybe -- it was prob prudent but the city knew what was coming and  could have reacted better

Crap news Max, can imagine how disappointing it is for the family, and costly.

If you can get yourself to Australia next year I'll buy you a ticket... Provided they announce some shows

What the city of St. Louis needed was for U2 to go away and not be a concern.  Hanging out for a day and expecting the authorities to keep them, as opposed to the city, in mind would be a distraction in a crisis.

I know you're disappointed, but in the grand scheme of things it's just a concert.  What's going on in the city is far more important.

This cancellation is trending on bing news (maybe yahoo and other news outlets too).

They picked a nice orange picture of our babies on the JT stage. The headline says "U2, Sheeran cancel etc"

I'm happy and surprised U2 gets top billing, when we all know Sheeran is more relevant with the mainstream now.

I expect they might announce the tour around Dec 1 but probably not tour until the spring. They won't play any dates after Brazil in 2017.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned what happened in Paris as a concern for the band. No, this is not a terrorist event, but can you imagine the trouble if they were to stubbornly push through with subpar security? Would people still appear at the show? They'd also be criticized for having a concert while ignoring the turmoil. There really was no choice, not to mention they'd hate to be viewed on the side of the priveliged, institutionalized side of things.

Some guy said there would be a big tour announcement for u2 and the killers this fall. But the actual tour is next year. So in other words, tickets will probably go on sale in December

U2 and the Killers together? Or both bands on separate tours?

I can understand your disappointment, but you're not the only guy to have a concert cancelled on them. The concert couldn't go ahead tonight, logistically impossible.

Killers tour announced for may already. Killers only touring as half a band these days, no Dave, no mark. Plus they're just not big anymore - they are playing a pretty small 'arena' here when they sold out the big one twice over in 2007.

I feel like the aus/NZ U2 kick off is feasible, typically that would be march if it's indoors.

Fingers crossed I guess.

Thank god it's separate tour from the killers. U2 are still top touring act A-listers. They don't need to "feat" anyone on tour. They aren't washed-up bsb-nkotb.

Really cool they managed to pull more radio-relevant groups as support acts, like OneR and Lumineers and Mumford.

Also, I don't know the killers much, except frontman Brandon Flowers is supposedly a cutie, as many female fans would regard.

FWIW, the unrest here is tough from a couple of angles.   My kids and I were set to attend and we were also very disappointed.   I have been to most of their STL shows and have to say that the right thing to do was to cancel this one.  Thought I would share my daughters thoughts per her post on FB regarding it.   Perhaps all of those times she listened to Bono blaring 'Pride' out of the speakers in my vehicle left an impact:

"I had been looking forward to seeing U2 tonight for months. I'm very disappointed that the concert was cancelled. But I'm way more disappointed in the attitudes of people in my city. If you find yourself saying that the protests are "stupid" or "unnecessary" you need to check yourself. People are hurting and that should hurt you, not offend you. Praying for St. Louis tonight. #blacklivesmatter"

I ended up eating BBQ, going to the National Blues Museum, and checking out some live Blues.

Basically I pretended I was enacting a cut scene from Rattle and Hum where the band farts around St. Louis for a day.

Everyone has to grieve a loss in their own way.  Losing out on a U2 show is definitely a loss; maybe not in the same category as a family tragedy, but when you've been looking forward to it for months I can understand the hurt.  So sorry for my St. Louis friends....here's to next year!
