Title: Larry Mullen, Jr.: Backing Vocals?
Post by: laoghaire on May 14, 2018, 04:17:01 PM
I just saw LMJr credited with backing vocals on Zoo TV Live (Sydney). What vocals did he do?

I know he sings backing on Numb a bit.  I think as you watch the show you can see him add a little to a few other songs (can't remember which off the top of my head).

If I remember correctly, Larry wrote the chorus of Numb so they try to force him to sing on it.

That's funny. I'm trying to think where backing vocals are done on the live version.

I see Adam doing some backing vocals at Red Rocks, like I Will Follow.

I don't have any idea of the quality of either of their vocals.

We know Edge has a nice voice. He sang the last verse of Stand By Me somewhere on Zoo TV and it was very nice - along with other examples.

Larry has sung live on Zoo Station, Numb, SBS, Love & Peace, Elevation, ASOH and Daddy's Gonna Pay.

I remember watching some footage of the 87 tour and Adam sang backing in parts of Bullet

Larry sounds like Bono. No idea what Larry's isolated singing sounds like, should be pleasant.

Larry also sings in 360 tour's Moment of Surrender. But I can't isolate him.

Do a search for Larry on youtube and you'll find him singing Irish drinking songs solo. You'll find out exactly.

Larry is absolutely used to support Bono. SBS and Elevation are great examples of that. Zoo Station. Numb, Daddy's Gonna Pay, MOS. Unknown Caller.

Thanks for sharing those! I liked LMJ's Wild Rover the best, but he did a great job on all of them.

"Larry sounds like Bono" got me intrigued enough to listen to three songs sung by Larry.

I was not impressed.

Larry is a good singer tbf.

I have no idea where people/person got he "sounds like Bono" from though....The Edge sounds similar to Bono alright

No big thing :)
I think my expectations were affected by "sounds like Bono" lol.

It can be hard for me to tell Edge from Bono sometimes, though. They are different but the falsetto is similar. Edge has gotten quite good at it. At this point he is on lead guitar and lead falsetto.

^I still haven't listened to Larry isolated but he "sounds like Bono" in that his backing vocals blend right in with Bono's main voice. Moment of Surrender, Love and Peace oe, etc whatever other songs he sings on.

Purists will argue B vs E has many differences: that Edge sounds smoother than Bono. Edge prob can hit a higher range. Bono has more raspy emotion, etc.

Yeah they are different, and yet sometimes I'm not sure who's singing.

E has better pitch, B has the power and emotion.

LMJ layers well with Bono in some instances. He can reinforce Bono. No one 'sounds like' Bono except Bono.

There's a long history in rock of lead vocalists singing like their front men. There are some REM songs where Mike Mills backing vocals and Michael Stipe's backing vocals are hard to distinguish.

Anyway, Bono was super at harmonizing the Ellen show Love is Bigger great performance, while Edge did main vocals on the final chorus/climax.

Might be the first time I heard Bono supporting & harmonizing!
