Pavarotti vs Bono on Miss Sarajevo
« on: November 12, 2010, 06:38:51 PM »
Luciano Pavarotti did the opera part in Miss Sarajevo, but in live performances, Bono has done the opera part instead. Who do you think sounds better?

This is hard for me; technically, Pavarotti is perfect, because... well, he's Pavarotti! But Bono doing the vocals... I dunno, but in light of the fact that his voice isn't perfect (especially as he's getting older) and the fact that he is NOT Pavarotti somehow makes it more impressive. There is more of an effort and strain on Bono to pull that part off, which I think makes it sound more emotional. And to do it EVERY night is just incredible.

Exactly.  I voted for Bono because you dont expect to hear Pavoratti-esque vocals come from him.  But you do in fact hear it.  And its beautiful

This has got to be a joke. Bono is a great singer, but he doesn't compare to Pavarotti...no way.

Well, of course Bono doesn't compare. That wasn't the original question. On THIS particular song, you expect perfection from Pavarotti, but NOT from Bono. It blew me away to hear Bono do what he did in this song the first time.

Pavarotti of course, by about a million miles.

Come on gang, Bono is a great rock & roll singer (well, he used to be), but you can not compare him to Pavarotti.

JUST BASED ON THIS SONG ALONE I think Bono's is much better overall. Pavarotti's great, but it seems easy for him to do. Bono has trouble with it and really puts his heart and soul into it. Much much better

This is sort of like asking who is better on WLCTT - BB King or Bono.  The answer is pretty obvious.

Actually I was surprised that Bono could carry the part as well as he did.  I even seem to remember getting chills at that part when I saw them in Charolotte.  But Pavarotti is amazing in the part.

Pavarotti's voice was amazing, but Bono did an amazing job on his own accord...
I love them together singing Ave Maria too....

I went Bono. There's no question Pavarotti is the better singer, but on this song I prefer Bono stylistically.

When I hear Pavarotti doing this song, I think: "What a great voice he has..."

When I hear Bono (every single time), I end up crying... I'm a grown up guy, but I can't help it,
everytime he reaches the higher notes, it makes me think of my late father, or the love I lost,
or how sad, and wonderful at the same time, life is...

Pavarotti sounds great, but he doesn't take me even near to that place.
So there's no question for me on this one... it's Bono, hands down.

On a good night, Bono does a very decent job on this song. Still, there is no comparison from a technical point of view. This poll is not about technical prowess however...which is the only reason Bono gets votes in this comparison.

To be honest, I'm not a fan of opera music. So I kind of find Pavarotti's voice too perfect and irritating. I like Bono's singing better for the same reasons as cited by Drummer Boy: it's the imperfections in the song, and Bono pouring his heart into it to nail it, that make the song have more heart and soul. I love when Bono sings it. Cant help it. But, then, I think Bono has the voice of a seraph. ;) What can I say? I'm a rock-n-roll girl, not an opera girl.

Look its a no brainer that Pavarotti has the better voice technically - however hearing Bono belting that song out has made that a U2 song now (for me)

So I went Bono!

Pavoratti's voice is perfect

Bono's voice is imperfect.

Bono wins because imperfection is more soulful, personal, delicate, sensitive, and beautiful than perfection in my mind.
