That is strange, haven't heard a thing about that. Quite a high price too, so it could have a lot of tracks on it. But really it's been like what, 2 years since the last compilation? Seems pretty pointless. Although if it means they'll be releasing a couple of new singles that'll be something.

Maybe it was meant to be to 2010?

watch Mercy be on it, and its album only, and you have to pay the $45 for it :D

It's $45 for ONE disc? There has to be more to it than that.

Wonder if Best Buy will have it cheaper?

I hope its supposed to be from 2000 to 2010, we don't need a 3 decade greatest hits (they aren't done yet  ;D) Plus they should wait for SOA to come out

It's an import, if you read the details it says its being released by Universal Japan. It's still strange how they've already released an 80's greatest hits, 90's greatest hits, and U2 18 Singles. I couldn't imagine why we need another hits CD, unless it's just U2's record label getting greedy.

Or it's an option for fans who don't want to buy all the albums....it could also be another way to help fulfill the album portion of their Live Nation contract....

I have a friend who is studying Japanese culture and he said that albums from there usually cost around $45, but that they normally get released in the US for much less. So let's keep our eyes open. <Like they could sneak one past US, not! :D>

Japanese releases are super expensive which is why they usually get extra tracks.

A lot of the Brit bands have extras and rarities that are Japanese-only.

However, U2 doesn't seem to do this as much.  This might actually just be a two-pack of the 80-90 and 90-2000 together for one price?  Interesting.

Wow another compulation album. We can really use another one. Didn't Bono said that he'll never release a compulation cause it means that one's career is over?
we'll here we have another one and probably another bland album coming up.

I remember seeing a Japanese import 1980-2000 Best Of YEARS ago, like right after 90-00 Best Of came out. I don't remember anything else about it... Maybe this is a reprint of that? Who knows...

I don't remember Bono saying that Johnny Amsterdam, no. In fact, the only quotes I remember him saying about compilations are that they mark the end of something (in the case of U218), or that it felt like a good time to do it (1980-90 and 1990-2000).
Would you mind citing a source?

I don't recall that statement exactly, although I do remember Bono once mockingly saying (with sniggers from other band members) that a greatest hits package will be the bands next release. It was a long time ago though - maybe late 80's or early 90's, perhaps during the mischievous Zoo TV era?

Anyway, I hope this is not a fully blown release. All this milking of the back-catalogue is leaving me a bit dispirited. Some of the remastered stuff I like, but U218? Let's honour the contract and count the cash!!

It's something in that vein he said in the 90's while they were on a roll. Any way U218 was one of their worst moves. That compilation wasn't great at all.

U218 is the perfect compilation for those who have a cursory knowledge of U2, but don't own any of their albums.
