Did U2 rip off "pump it up"?
« on: January 18, 2009, 11:12:09 AM »
In my opinion they didn't but i can see the similarities between the cadences. IMO it isnt substancial enough to accuse them of ripping him off.

P.s. it is hard judge anything until monday when we will get the whole song

I don't think so. The way Bono sings the lyrics is somewhat similar, true. But you could also see similarities to it and the ending of "Wire." Same way of singing it kinda fast.

If you're talking about the 22-second high-quality clip on YouTube, yeah I would agree that there's a bit that sounds almost exactly the same. I think if you listen to that U2 clip, you hear two couplets that both have the same basic melody, but the notes have different "timing" or something (I know nothing about music theory or terminology). The second one (heard @ 0:07) sounds almost exactly like this bit of Pump It Up (@ 0:58):

I don't know how it will sound in the context of the full song. I mean, when you add in the chorus & bridge and all that, and the rest of the verses, which may or may not be sung like that, is it really going to matter? Hard to tell until we hear the full song.

I thought I was the only one who thought it sounds similar to "Pump It Up" - I can wait till I hear the whole song (well, not really ;) ) to make my judgment.  It sounds great, though!

Yay!  New U2 music!

It is similar in the same way Stairway to Heaven sounds like Bohemian Rhapsody ie they are both musical pieces.

Did Costello rip off Dylan? Did Dylan rip off Guthrie? Its what you do with it that counts, 'Born To Run' was similar to loads of stuff but it was still fresh and exciting and moved rock n roll forwards. "Rock n roll has been reinvented once again' Lanois was more specific in that statement than anyone realised.
