Does anyone else think Bono needs a makeover?
« on: January 05, 2010, 04:35:07 PM »
I was reading what Johnny Amsterdam said in another thread, about Bono 'hurting' u2 because of his piracy comments. And i have to agree. I mean, this post is just gonna be an opinionated rant, but basically...

Bono appearing constantly 'righteous' makes people hate him, and by extension, hate the band. When he makes comments saying that piracy is stopping bands getting money, he's effectively complaining about rich rock stars losing a fraction of their money when the worlds JUST HAD A RECESSION and people are losing their jobs and homes etc...
Is it just me or does it appear (not saying he's actually doing this) that Bono's defending the corporations and record companies, trying to argue that they shouldn't be losing the money they're entitled to. I mean, Bono's entitled to his opinion, sure, and i kind of agree about piracy being bad, but all i'm saying is that its not helping him or the band to say such things when it makes him seem hypocritical (rich guy complaining about losing money).
Instead of writing articles for the New York times, why doesn't he just... i dunno... write music for SOA? I think Bono's campaigning against aids and poverty is fantastic, and he is of course entitled to his opinion when it comes to piracy... but does he really have to complain so publicly against piracy when its so obvious people are just gonna label him a rich fatcat trying to save his and his record companys money? I mean, think of Edge, Larry, and Adam! When he focuses on this kind of stuff, he's making himself and the band MORE unpopular, and seeing as NLOTH kind of flopped, he couldn't pick a worse time, and furthermore, if SOA is not a dead certainty, shouldn't he stop wasting time with these articles and focus more on the music?
So to summarise, i think this new decade should see a new Bono. A new Bono who:
Focuses more on music, and making himself famous through his music, rather than through his political activism. Does he have to have a press conference every time he works to fight poverty?
Doesn't try to defend the record companies when they're losing money. No one will ever thinks thats cool.
Doesn't wear those glasses.  ;D I mean, seriously, i believe they're becoming iconic in a bad way. Everyone i talk to who hates bono or u2 always brings them up. Can't he stop wearing them, and go for a new image? Or if the 'eye problem' story is true (i dont think it is), then can't he at least wear some cool sunglasses, not ones that show his eyes and come in weird colours?
Sorry if i come off as ranting, i believe Bono is entirely entitled to his opinions, and for the record, i love the guy, not just as a singer / songwriter (although he is my favourite), but as someone who is so committed to fighting poverty and aids etc... but i also believe that as the frontman for u2, he has a certain responsibilty to NOT allow himself or his band to become so unpopular. Can't he change a little? Or am i just being stupid?  :-[

Lol fair enough  :)
I do admire him for being a rock star with a conscience, but i'm starting to think he's becoming out of touch, taking it too far, and hurting the band.  :(

Well, if Bono stopped speaking his mind about his beliefs, if he didn't comment on piracy (which he specifically said it was for the underdog and not for him or U2, as well as not to run a campaign with famous faces but rather intelectual people), if he took off the glases and stayed in a studio... well he would literally seize to exist!!! in fact not only would he stop being bono, he would become taylor swift!!! And the world knows it can't handle another swift!!!

Anyway... I think it's his ego and ethos as well as the band's since they  all in some way or another express their mind and fight for their individual cuases that make U2 U2!. So bono should not stop in fact I think he needs to pursue those ideals because that's what separates him from the bunch.

And his columns are fine and I don't think he flyes to NYC and sit's in a desk for 5/8 in some corner with an old school typing machine writing a column, he probably wakes up at like 11 am has a cup o'joe and writes an email to some dude in the NYP... no biggy ;)

I say long live bono and the boys!

I think Bono is in need of an ironic onstage persona, the way the world is going.  Bring back MacPhisto from his exile working the clubs of Tokyo, the capital of Zoo TV.

yeah, i do agree.  bono does need a little of mac back.  but unfortunately, i think he's in a more honest stage of his life right now and is really starting to get more opinionated about things.  it just happens.

Is it just me or does it appear (not saying he's actually doing this) that Bono's defending the corporations and record companies,

He attacked ISPs. Who, are, ya know, GIANT MULTINATIONAL CORPORATIONS.

I still believe there are people who still believe he cannot be out of touch...Which he is. I read and not once did he mention the common man or woman who are struggling to keep his status afloat. I read all of his articles--I think his best one not that I agree was rebranding Africa and its developments-- and just it saw as his opinion. So I believe he just a conscience rock star who is really out of touch with the modern man.

I agree with Bono, but he has to tone it down

Maybe set it back to the same political style he had during the 80s

Ok look, i won't pretend to know much about internet piracy and the arguments for and against, and i'll admit i didn't really read the article completely through - however, his argument is about protecting a product that is being downloaded for free, and in turn implies a defence of the record companies, who i'm assuming are the ones who are losing the most money and are the most angry about money loss (i'm sure Bono's rich enough to not really care personally). However, yeah, he has also defended up and coming bands, who are really losing out because of this, so maybe his argument was fair enough.
But whether he's right or wrong is irrelevant (its not linear!). That's not what my post was really about. Its about what Bono's doing to u2's image. When he compares piracy to child pornography, or likens internet control to chinese oppression (whilst supporting the former), he's not gonna get people on his side, and its just another example of him saying something which will make people get angry at him, and make u2 more unpopular.
