Elevation v Vertigo. Arena Tours Compared.
« on: January 06, 2010, 03:10:04 PM »
The Elevation and Vertigo (North American leg) tours are the most similar U2 tours in recent years in terms of staging, production and setlists.  Excluding the stadium legs of the Vertigo tour, how would you compare and contrast these two arena shows and explain which you think was the best?

I didnt see a show at either tour but I think Elevation was better because:

The emotions of the band and crowd after 9/11
Bono's dad dying and his reaction to that
SLANE
It was a smaller, more intimate, more personal, more "about the music" that Popmart was

I saw four Elevation shows and one Vertigo.  I preferred the Elevation setlists:  they were playing Walk On and Until The End of the World every night.  I was at the Philadelphia show about a month after 9/11 and the country was still healing.  Overall, I preferred the ATYCLB songs live to the songs from Bomb.  Don't get me wrong Vertigo was great too.

I saw two post 9/11 Elevation shows and I saw Vertigo both in 3 stadiums in Europe and in 2 arenas in the USA.  The Vertigo show was a great, exciting stadium show, and worked OK in an arena, but I don't think there will ever be anything anywhere again like the incredible, spiritual, powerful experience the band delivered on the Elevation Tour.  It truly was another level.

Elevations hands down.

Better setlists (no htdaab songs to spoil things, Pop songs played, TGBHF occasionally, EBTTRT, etc)
Awesome version of The Fly

Even the Pre 9/11 shows were way better than than the Vertigo shows

Elevation didn't have Bono's boring speech before One.

I thought the Vertigo stage set was visually impressive with the LED curtain.

I have to say that I think the Elevation tour was the better of the two. The heart shaped stage, the superior lighting ( I LOVED the digital female forms during mysterious ways!), a better set list, walking out with the house lights up AND the band on a mission to prove they are the biggest band in the world.

based on the shows I saw...

better staging: Elevation

better setlist: Elevation

better performance: Vertigo

since the last category is the most important, Vertigo > Elevation.

I attended an Elevation show and was totally blown away by it, it was superb.  I feel resentful that we Europeans didn't merit a Vertigo arena tour because it looked visually stunning on the DVD.  As it was I missed out on seeing the Vertigo tour and the 360 tour because I don't watch concerts in football stadiums.

Why didn't Europeans get a Vertigo arena tour when the North Americans did?   Do U2 regard their European fans with contempt?

If they don't, they should. Maybe y'all should bathe once in a while.

Elevation..hands down

1. The boys coming on stage..lights up..nothing to hide..raw..bare stage..brilliant.
2.  The post 9/11 shows..not a dry eye in the house..truly a spiritual moment.
3.  The boys at their best..and yes..i am a long time fan..from day one.  Have seen them in every era..but for some reason..this tour touched a part of my heart and soul like no other.

I missed both but it would have meant a lot to me to have seen the Elevation Tour.

Elevation topped Vertigo bigtime.

1.  Elevation returned U2 to arenas in USA after ~10 years.
2.  Elevation introduced the inner stage (heart).  Vertigo basically just copied Elevation stage design.
3.  Elevation entrance to heart was first come first serve, which was great (especially for shows early in the Elevation tour.  Later in the tour, the GA line was supposedly "hijacked" by fans who went to multiple shows).
4.  Elevation Bad/40/Streets combo was one of U2's finest moment live.
5.  Elevation was U2's least political tour.  Vertigo had too much USA/Bush bashing.
6.  Elevation shows after 9/11 were extra special.
