Just heard it yesterday - that guy doesn't have the range to sing that song properly. Terrible song choice, plus the arrangement's very dull.

I don't think teenagers will go hunting for the original by U2 after hearing Lee's version. Only those who really like to dig for music, maybe. But the average teen? Nah, it won't hit them, "oh, this is a cover of a U2 song, let's see which one was better."

Sadly true, even in this age of Spotify and Youtube. Tragically most young people probably think one is a Mary J Blige song too :( I suddenly feel very old when I think this current generation of teenagers haven't heard the original Beautiful Day!

i.. sorry guys but i still am not sure about that.
i think several people will want to heear the original . with the One thing-- not only was beautiful day more popular than One, (and it was, not on the billboard charts, but in terms of exposure to the public, airplay, and place in 21st century culture..) but the original one is 20 years old. beautiful day is not.
beautiful day is just KNOWN to be U2. it's just one of the most U2ey songs out there (if you can say there's a "u2ey song".)
even kids these days will recognise it as such.. imo.  :-\

I wish I could share your optimism. But I still say don't underestimate the stupidity today's kids are capable of.

Of course, our awesome U2 Teens are exempt--they are a special breed indeed.

I'm a teen, and I agree. Kids now are idiots. It's beyond comprehension.

I know for a fact that my 15 year old sister would not have known who's song that was that Lee sang if she didn't live with me

Exactly. BD came out 10 years ago. I was six then. I was a kindergartener! Six-year-olds aren't really in tune with the big songs of the time.

Maybe the 20 something year old people would recognize the song as U2's, but American Idol's main demographic is teenage girls, and teenage girls were between 5 and 8 years old when BD came out.  There's NO WAY they'd even make the U2 connection, nevermind actually get into the real song or U2

Sad but true. AT least WE know the original is far superior. 8)
