"After the sun, all the colours came out..." Not only is that an abominable change to the lyric, it also makes no meteorological sense, please.

I yelled "WHAT?!" when I heard that......what an idiot.  ::)

I know for a fact that my 15 year old sister would not have known who's song that was that Lee sang if she didn't live with me

Exactly. BD came out 10 years ago. I was six then. I was a kindergartener! Six-year-olds aren't really in tune with the big songs of the time.

I was five when it came out. Luckily, it was still pretty popular with the rock-music-people when I hit highschool.

Why does everyone care so much???
Lee releasing this isnt going to make U2 less popular....

so why does everyone care? If you dont like it.. then dont listen to it.
On the studio version Lee says the words right... ( so obviously he was nervous the night he sang..
who wouldnt be? That was the song that determined if he was going to be the next American Idol. )

Plus, he seems like a really nice guy who is obviously a fan of U2. ;)

In a way, it does.  Everything we've been saying about the song and how teenagers watching the show will connect Beautiful Day to Lee will not make U2 any more popular, thats for sure

yeah but will it make them less??

Yeah, sure.. teenagers at my school might become a fan of Beautiful Day sung by Lee...
but if he hadnt released it..would they ever become a fan of Beuatiful Day by U2 ? probably not.. its 10 yrs old.
So yeah,
sure... it might not make U2 anymore popular.. but it wont make them less by any means.

So why does it matter?

Lee's release of Beautiful Day = more teens and young people listening to song = a handful going to original maker U2 = a smaller handful liking U2's better = an even smaller handful exploring U2 songs = some new U2 fans

It tarnishes the song in my mind.  But agree to disagree I guess

I'll put money against that happening

Chris.. he means that COULD happen.( not many people.. but atleast some ) Its not like U2 is going to gain a whole bunch of haters cause Lee covered their song.

I really do NOT think its fair to be hateful towards Lee just because he covered one of our favorite songs.
If you, me, anyone on this site was on American Idol.. we would cover U2 too.
So yeah, he has good taste. Not his fault.

I'm not hating on him, I'm talking about the effect on the song and its popularity.  Singing the song made him win, good for him.  Nothing against him.  I just wish U2 songs werent used on Idol, and I actually wish the band didnt let people use them on the show

Yes, you may not be... but MANY comments on this thread have been hateful.

And I think its fine that U2 lets AI use their songs. It would look bad if they said they didnt want anyone too.
