How will Bono's back injury inspire U2's music?
« on: May 31, 2010, 10:56:01 AM »
The last time Bono had a major health issue---a throat cancer scare in '98 I think--it inspired the songs Kite and Beautiful Day. Now that he's had this serious back injury which will certainly put him out of both touring and political work, how do you think it'll affect the material on the next record?

I'm not sure his back injury will affect SOA so much because they've likely got the bones of that already going ( no pun intended) & to complement NLOTH.

However..... This injury, surgery and tour postponement is major not just for Bono and the band but for so many.  So  I think it'll can't help but definitely inspire new songs for their next album after SOA.   I think it will inspire many emotions, thoughts,  and themes that could be written about from Bono & the band's perspectives, as well as other more universal ones.   That said, if Bono & U2 come up with some strong lyrics and melodies that they play on the next leg of the tour, and if the songs "fit" their theme well, then they could be logically added to SOA or replace existing songs.   :)

I see a cd of remixes entitled "Slipped Disc O' Teque." with songs like "I Threw Out My Back Throwing a Brick Through A

Window," "Vicadin Vertigo," and "Wake Up! Bed Pan!" ... ... ... In all seriousness, I'm sure the downtime will awaken some

creative muse and fans will be the richer. GET WELL BONO!

Oh, frommage!   ;)   (The 1st one is pretty witty though...  ;D and I'm sure we could have a field day with this.)

Get well Bono!  *runs away*

It may take him to a dark place, that'll please the 90's U2 fans.

Vocally, at least, I can see him singing softer and with more head voice. It takes a lot of energy to sing the rough, rowdy notes like on NLOTH, which I suspect Bono might not feel like doing.

i guess maybe bring up the theme about valuing what you take for granted... and the whole idea of "things couldv'e gone really bad" sorta might come through in the lyrics.
not sure it will though.

There'll be some alterations to the design in the spine and back areas.  ;D

Love this photo!   8)  Inspiration for us and his PT sessions!

The lyrics that spring to mind for me right now & Bono are from Crazy:

It's not a hill, it's a mountain
As you start out the climb
Do you believe me, or are you doubting
We're gonna make it all the way to the light
But I know I'll go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight

...It's not a hill, it's a mountain
As we start out the climb
Listen for me, I'll be shouting
Shouting to the darkness, squeeze out sparks of light

It takes on a whole new light although unintentional.

I think any major event in one's life may serve as an inspiration for an artist to paint, write lyrics for a song, etc. So I would not be surprised if new material has something about this in it.
