U2 fans "obsessive"?
« on: January 23, 2009, 01:31:51 AM »
I was reading this (rather old) article the other day. I'm not sure if anyone here has seen it or if it has been discussed in the past. Anyway, I think the author makes a few valid points regarding U2's music. He even gives a shout-out to @U2, calling it "excellent" and "friendlier" than the "cold and hard to use" official site. But the statement that interested me the most was: "U2 fans are, even by rock fan standards, obsessive." I know it's only a brief sentence compared to the rest of the article,  but the question I'm asking the @U2-ers is: Do you think U2 fans are more fanatical than other fans? Is that really the type of image we project onto other people?

For the record, I think we are. Slightly. But hey, that's just me.

Heck yeah, we're obsessive.  Have you checked out the threads devoted to people's U2 collections, u2 mittens (oh yeah, that was me!  :-[), interior decorating U2-style, number of U2 t-shirts people own...The fact that we can insert U2 song lyrics into almost any conversation.  People here are nuts!  (And I mean that in the nicest way possible.)

I think we're definitley more obsessive than fans of a lot of other bands, but that's only because U2 is so much better than a lot of other bands. It stands to reason.  :)

Oh, you bet we are!  I think only maybe fans of The Beatles and Elvis come close to rivaling our passions.  U2 isn't just our favorite band, for many of us, U2 is a way of life!

Yeah, i think it's probably a fair comment that we are more obsessive as fans than fans of any other band. I think that's the measure of what U2 does to us and how good they are.

I dont know about other bands and their obsessive followers - there are the Dead Heads - they are pretty obsessive.
But for me- guilty! Totally obsessed, proud of it, and glad we have a wonderful place here to talk about it.
GPII is right, only Elvis and Beatles have similar obsessive fans.

Obsession is fine as long as you have other interests and have a happy life. I think that applies to most of us here.
