Bono in new Jonathan Franzen Novel
« on: October 06, 2010, 11:35:27 AM »
Bono got a mention in the new novel by Jonathan Franzen, Freedom.  One of the characters is a middle-aged ex-punker who is interviewed circa 2004 in the novel.

"Sheryl crow is a chewing-gum manufacturer, and I say that as a longtime chewing gum manufacturer myself.  The person who cares what Sheryl Crow thinks about the war in Iraq is the same person who's going to buy an obscenely overpriced MP3 player because Bono Vox is shilling for it.

I know I just made a crack about Bono, but he had more integrity than the rest of the music world combined.  If you made a fortune selling Chicklets, [bubble gum] you might as well go ahead and sell overpriced iPods, too, and get even richer, and then use your money and your status to get entree to the White House and try to do some actual hands-on good in Africa.  Like: be a man, suck it up, admit that you like being part of the ruling class, and that you believe in the ruling class, and that you'll do whatever it takes to consolidate your position in it."

U2 and Bono are mentioned further in Freedom as well:

"U2's Achtung Baby, beloved by both of them but especially to Connie, had been the soundtrack of their mutual deflowering.  The opening track, in which Bono avowed that he was ready the push, had been their love song to each other and to capitalism.  The song had made Joey feel ready to have sex, ready to step out of childhood, ready to make some real money."

I will warn that this book isn't for everyone.  If you're the feel good, happy go lucky, religious type, probably not a good buy.  And depending upon how well this book sells, there could be a noticeable 1 to 2% increase in the divorce rate this year.

Sorry for massively resurrecting the dead thread here, but I found a U2 reference early in the novel that no one has mentioned yet!  It's on page 13 when Joey thermo-embeds Connie's watch with READY FOR THE PUSH (copied from another watch with Pearl Jam lyrics).   8)  I'm only page 14 now, but based on your other posts, I'm pretty sure this little gem was another shout out.
