I think some Boomtown Rats songs are much better contenders.

"This is Bono of U2 and I wish you a Happy Christmas and a Merry new year. Is that right?"

I prefer Band Aid.

Mmmm... let me see...

Huey Lewis and co.
                           vs.
Simon Le Bon and co.

Er, hum... think I'll go with Band Aid... tough call

We Are the World. Do They Know... has some awful and shallow lyrics in it and is just not very tasteful imo. I like the song structure and songwriting, but the lyrics and the delivery (even Bono's bit, oof) kill it for me.

No-one plays We are the World in the UK anymore.  I always found it 'very wholesome' in an American kind of way.
Do They Know It's Christmas? also has some 'hard to stomach now' lyrics.  Like in Somalia or Mali they wouldn't commemorate Christmas because the country is largely Muslim?
But the Bono line - I can hear that so clearly if the song is played in a room of people loudly getting excited for Christmas. He cuts through it like a knife through butter.

"We Are The World" had Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Paul Simon, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Diana Ross, etc.  So, for pure star power, We Are The World wins.  I like both songs.  Both songs were put together fairly quickly, so neither song is great lyrically, but their hearts were in the right place.  Bono may come across as being full of it sometimes, but his heart is in the right place too.  Because of these songs and the news about the famine at that time, I was inspired to donate monthly to a great charity called World Vision and I still do.  I later found out that Bono and Ali have worked with World Vision - See the link below for a great story about Bono and Ali making their first trip to help with famine relief in Africa.  Even if someone thinks Bono is a blowhard, they should at least give him credit for helping to raise hundred of millions of dollar to help fight AIDS and extreme poverty in Africa and elsewhere.

A lot of haters like to complain about Bono being some sort of hypocrite because of his charity work, but I wonder how many of them do anything themselves to help the truly needy in this world.
