Willie Williams quote - ZooTV vs Popmart
« on: November 26, 2010, 09:03:24 AM »
"It's PopMart that stands the test of time to a much greater degree than Zoo TV."

-- Willie Williams, 2002

I just saw this quote on the atu2.com main page.   Is he crazy??  I think ZooTV is even more relevant now that it was in the early 1990's.  And PopMart just seems silly now.

What do you think?

Popmart was so far beyond anything before or since that no one will even try to approach it.

everybody does Zoo TV these days.

Well hey, Bono has also said that PopMart is the best U2 tour ever, correctly identifying that i has a far more consistent theme and concept than ZooTV and one which has a real connection to the album.

From a stage and lighting perspective - which is where Willie is coming from - I believe he is right.

PopMart was brilliant.  Having seen both ZOO TV (indoors and Outside Broadcast) and PopMart shows the latter was the piece of art that made more of an impression on me.

In terms of the music well that's a different story...

I guess I just don't "get" Popmart.   To me, it was just an attempt to out-do ZooTV with a bigger screen and huge, meaningless props.

And the question was not really which tour was better but which one stands the test of time better.   And, I think the overall concept of ZooTV actually makes more sense in today's culture, where TV's are everywhere you look, than it did in the early '90s.
