Year End Question: What Was Your Best Year As a U2 Fan?
« on: December 28, 2010, 09:11:19 AM »
The question isn't, "What was U2's best year," but what was your best year as a U2 fan.  Sometimes it's fun to look back.  Was your best year as a U2 fan made because of a special concert you attended, because a certain album was released, because you visited Ireland, you met a band member, or some other special moment in your life was marked by U2's music?

I'll be thinking about my year after reading about some other peoples'....  :D

2009 or 2010. 2009 was the year I saw them live for the first time. 2010 I saw epic concerts.

It would have to be 2002. I was 11 and that was the year I knew all their "1980-1990 Greatest Hits" by heart and listened to Achtung Baby for the first time. Plus, I watched their Grammy performance with fascination and the Superbowl one as well. Also ATYCLB/Elevation were fresh and even today I feel a deep connection to that album/tour/era. :)

Runner-up would have to be 2009 because I first visited Ireland during the spring that year and saw a few U2 landmarks, plus my 360 show in September was the first time I saw them live.

Can I say that a whole lot of jealousy came up for me in reading this part?  ;)  :D I liked reading about your Big Years, ABRS. Thanks!

2005-2006.

I became a fan in late '05, so that was the time I spent catching up with all of their albums.

Even though I became a fan and saw them live in 2009, I'd have to say 2010 because my admiration for them, and Bono in particular, matured. Though I was disappointed to lose 'my' shows this year, I was struck by their determination to return to the stage and by their dedication to their fans.

That first moment when I heard "TORINO!" through the 1000 Mikes live feed has to be the greatest feeling I've had, even surpassing hearing Bad in Chicago, 2009. Never has a crappy audio sounded so good. ;D

2009.  I finally became "obsessed", developed my man crush on Bono, and saw U2 twice

tie.

2008 was the year I bought my first full album (Achtung), and they became my favorites.

2009 was the year No Line came out. they became my idols.

1989.  Rattle and Hum was released on VHS in February and a year long immersion into the sounds commenced...

I have almost a three-way tie, but not quite. In order:

*1989-1990, the (graduate school) year when I became a fan

*2009, thanks to both the release of NLOTH (in my top tier of U2 albums) and seeing 360 (to my mind, just about everything a U2 stadium show should be)

*1993, thanks to both seeing Zoo TV on pay-per-view and Zooropa

Probably 1994, which is when I moved to Europe and finally really understood ZooTV.
