New Opener for US Leg
« on: February 03, 2011, 10:13:27 AM »
Well, we had one in the run-up to the European leg which almost everyone got wrong, including me, so... let's try to beat ourselves this time!  To be precise, last time up, 50 people voted of whom 6 correctly predicted a new song as the opener. The overwhelming choice last time up was a resounding 52% selecting "Get On Your Boots" as the inevitable opener. (A guess so successful that Boots went on to be not first, not second, not even third, but *fourth* in the regular setlist.) So... yeah, our skills here are not exactly prodigious. Nevertheless....

:D What song will open the 360 Tour in the USA? (As opposed to the South African leg which may well be different depending on a possible new album)

1- Return of the Stingray Guitar- As it did in Europe and Australasia!
2- Mercy, full band Every Breaking Wave, Boy Falls... a song not yet released on an album but familiar to us from Europe 2010
3- Brand new Song- From a brand new album or not, a song we've never heard before
4- Classic song- Beautiful Day opening rather than up second, as we know they considered before Europe? Vertigo? Another classic?
5- NLOTH song- Breathe or Magnificent making a comeback? Boots, ála Rose Bowl? Hell, they considered MoS to open before Europe so literally nothing is off-limits!

If you pick 2, 4 or 5, please specify so we can see who called it right!

Had to pick a new song because i'm so (naively, i know) sure that there will be a new album out by the US dates. Which would mean probably the lead single opening the shows, if not another popular song from the new album  :)

What do you think, Unknown Caller?

I voted a brand new song.  The focus has been and will be off of NLOTH, so I highly doubt an NLOTH song will open shows.  None of the new songs from Europe are "openers".  A "classic" song hasn't opened a U2 show since Lovetown and I expect the trend to continue.  And I just cant see Stingray staying around, I dont know why.  If everything goes to plan, U2 will have new material to play and a new song to open shows

A big part of me thinks the most likely option is Stingray into the new lead single, but I could see them opening with a brand new song too- though maybe not the single. And I won't be shocked by a classic- the USA is more classic-friendly than Europe, IMO.  Of last year's songs, the only two possibilities I could see are MAYBE a full band EBW, or, actually, Boy Falls From The Sky which wouldn't surprise me at all.

If they do open with a brand new song, whether it's the lead single will be interesting. It's worth noting that it would be only the second time in history that they've opened a tour consistently with the lead single of their newest album. (Beautiful Day opened one Elevation show and Vertigo opened the outdoor gigs of the Vertigo Tour)

So, what the heck, I'll go on a limb and vote Stingray.

Fez - Being Born

Zooropa

Sixty Seconds In Kingdom Come

No Line On The Horizon

These are the only 4 I would personally like.

I remain convinced that playing Stingray into either Glastonbury or full band NLOTH is the opening this band desperately needs to be shown.

How about:

Sixty Seconds In Kingdom Come over the PA, then Stingray with band, leading into NLOTH.

I said Stingray because I pessimistically believe that nothing major is going to change on the US leg. Prove me wrong, U2!! ;) No matter what they do, though, I'll love being at a live show. Even though I've heard Streets 3 million times, ISHFWLF 1 million times, and Pride a half a million times. ;)

Stingray, only because it hasn't been used on any North American dates yet.

And I'm also waiting for a more concrete new album date before making any more guesses  ;)

Desire. 8)

Anything but Beautiful Day as the opener.

Breathe is the natural opener for 360.

Out Of Control
Gloria
Desire
Hawkmoon 269
Zoo Station
Discotheque
Mofo

Any of these would do for me. Or, a BRAND new song.

Optimistically, a brand new song from the brand new album. If not, then hopefully they open with NLOTH2

NLOTH 2 is a song at the end of the deluxe version of NLOTH on itunes. It's fairly similar to the regular one, but different (and I think it would be better live)
