I have been a fan since the early 80s. I have paid lots of money and travelled far to see them live; I even stood out in the cold London night air and rain to catch a glimpse when they played at thh small club in 2000 and again when the played at BBC White City in 2004 (I was one of those outside the gates in the rain). Does that count? ;D

My earlier post was tongue-in-cheek.

Of course Im a real fan of U2. And so is anyone else who loves their music. You do not have to be 'obsessed' with them and collect every thing that appears with their name on it, you may not have ever seen them live, you may only like 80's U2, or 90's U2, or everything since 2000 and don't care for their earlier stuff.

If listening to some or all of U2's music gives you great pleasure, you are fan! End of.

Sport teams are a good example of this, because success for a sport team can be very short lived. I'm a massive Everton FC fan (English soccer club). Have been since I was born into a family of Evertonians in 1969. I went to my first Everton match in 1975 with my father. In the early 1980's we were the best team in England (easily) and probably all of Europe also. We have been in the top division of the English football league longer than any other team in history. But the 1980's success was very brief success. Since 1990, we have sucked, royally! We were nearly relegated out of the top division on numerous occasions, and have not won a trophy for 16 years.

Point I'm trying to make - your team, or favorite group, or favorite movie star or whatever in this world does not have to be the best at what they do. If you like them, love them, follow them - you are a fan. Anyone tries telling me Im not a fan of Everton FC, or U2 because I criticize something they do, bite me!

Of course I'm not. I've been a fan since '05 and I was born during U2's Rattle & Hum era. Therefore, there's no possible way I could be a 'real fan'.

I'm not supposed to divulge this, but I am a member of an elite group of true U2 fans (there are 20 of us total, and a few are on this forum), and our job is to monitor the fandom of others and gently steer them in the right direction. TUC, you were flagged about a year ago for being way too positive, and your fandom was nearly revoked. But after having seen your complaining about last night's setlist, we have voted to extend to you a brief reprieve.

But just know this: you are being watched....

The image intrigued me, thats all I was saying. I was fascinated by the scared as s*** look on the boys face and the blood red lettering on the stark black and white photograph.
