Best Live Performance of...
« on: April 11, 2011, 06:13:50 PM »
I've seen this on many other forums, but only for individual songs on here, so I figured I'd start it. Basically, I'll name a song and write all the live perfomances and you pick your favorite.

1) One
ZOO TV Sydney
Popmart Live from Mexico City
U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle
U2 Vertigo Chicago
U2 360* at the Rose Bowl
Mary J. Blige version
Pavarotti version

My vote goes to Popmart, a very emotional performance dedicated to Michael Hutchence, and the Edge plays his solo beautifully.
Now...BEGIN!!

I'll leave this poll up for a week or so, then change the song.

Zoo TV. Seriously, there was NOTHING like that song on Zoo TV. It was performed with energy, when it was a new single to promote, and then took on its proper emotional meaning... And Bono's voice was amazing. :)
And the Unchained Melody snippet! <3 I die listening to that.

This is one of the very few cases where I'll give the award to Popmart. Bono's heartbreak over Michael Hutchens's passing ("I'm sorry . . . so sorry . . . for Michael Hutchens") leads to a very emotional performance and the most heart-rending version of the live-only coda ("Do you hear [us or me -- I don't remember which one in this case] coming, love?)" yet performed. Furthermore, Popmart's visuals to go with the song are superlative: Bono has found his "baby Jesus under the trash," as he set out to do at the beginning of the concert (in "Mofo" -- and so now can call on him in the closing "Wake Up Dead Man").

In the early days of Popmart, they closed the concert with the "Unchained Melody" snippet after "One" instead of with "Wake Up Dead Man."

On the Popmart DVD, one of the extras is One from Edmonton. Great version.

I also have a ripped CD of the Vancouver ZooTV arena show. My favorite version of One.

Bono's voice just isn't the same as it was in his 30's, he doesn't sing with the passion he used to.

Alright, looks like ZOO TV won this round. Even though i think Popmart is better, Sydney is a great version, with the buffalos, UNchained Melody, Bono hitting all the high notes, plus the fact that its ZOO TV.

Next song: Sunday Bloody Sunday

My vote goes to Slane Castle, with the emotional reading of the Omagh bombing victims
