Finally...after 25 years!
« on: May 26, 2011, 01:08:32 PM »
I have been a fan of U2 since 1985. I had always thought it would be incredible to meet the band but had no idea how to go about it. I saw them in 1987, 1992 and 2005. I never made an effort to see them since I thought it would be impossible.
Then comes the 360 tour, and I decided I needed to try to make this dream come true. My first show was Chicago 1. I went with my best friend. She and I were busy exploring that beautiful city and never did try to go to the hotel or stadium to meet the boys. Next was Dallas. I found where several fans were hanging out near a ramp that leads to the underground of the stadium.  This was a slightly unruly crowd. Several SUVs drove by but none stopped except for the last one. It was Bono and he had rolled down his window. He motioned with his watch that he was running late and couldn’t stop. I did get a nice picture. I wonder if the crowd had been calmer, if he would have gotten out. But in any case, this had been the closest I had come to Bono ever and I was literally shaking with excitement.
Before the rescheduled Denver show came, I informed my boyfriend that I would be spending some time on Friday before the show and Saturday, day of the show, trying to meet the band. He is not a fan but he does indulge me by going to the concerts with me. We arrived early Fri morning and checked into the Hotel VQ next to Invesco Field. After a short nap, I headed over to the stadium around 2 pm. There were a few fans there along with some stadium security. Everything was calm and a few more people showed up. We knew something was happening when the stadium security told us to leave. Of course, we decided only to back up a few feet from the entrance to the ramp. Some of U2’s staff now were milling around. A black car was making its way through the parking lot and one of U2’s security went up to the vehicle and came back to us to ask if we would like to meet Adam. Of course we would! Adam exits the vehicle and comes over to me first! He was so kind, smiling at all of us. I had him sign my NLOTH CD and asked for a hug which he obliged. He signed and took pictures with several others and then was on his way. About that time is when the wind started to pick up, the temperature dropped and it started to rain horizontally with some ice pellets. Luckily I had my rain jacket, because I wasn’t going anywhere! I knew the rest of the band would be coming. And they did (except Larry of course). 2 more SUVs drove up and out come Bono and Edge. Bono comes over and starts talking. Where I was, I couldn’t really hear him, but I believe he was saying thank you to us. While Bono was talking, Edge was going down the line and shaking hands. OMG, here is Edge taking my hand! Unbelievable! Bono started saying something about they were running late but did want to sign for us tomorrow. He gave some details but several of us could not hear, so I called out to Bono asking him to repeat himself. He looked at me and the rest of us and said they would sign at 3 pm Saturday at the Four Seasons! How incredible that Bono just told us where they were staying.
Now it is Saturday and I and another fan decided we would make our way over to the Four Seasons early. We got there around 12 pm hoping to catch the band leaving for lunch. They didn’t but a few hotel staff came over to us to let us know the band knows we were there and they would be coming out to meet us in a few hours. We decided to stay in order to get a good position in line when the band came out. Bono’s security, Brian, came to talk with us about the plan. He said they were going to have to move us just before the band comes out, to a safer part of the hotel property. Again we waited, and Brian finally came to get us about 4:15 and moved us to a grassy area next to a driveway leading to the hotel. This area was lower than the driveway, maybe 2 feet. He told us we had to jump down into this area and wait calmly. I was in the front row, about 7th in line. Finally, after being told the band would be out in ½ hour, around 5:15 2 black SUVs came up from the underground parking garage. Out steps Bono and Edge. Bono heads to the beginning of the line near me and Edge went to the opposite end. I couldn’t believe it…Bono is only feet from me. He chatted with those in line and signed autographs. By now there were about 100 people there and several hotel guests had made their way down too. When Bono got to me, I was tongue tied and just told him thank you after he signed the CD. When he moved to the next person I asked him how he was feeling and he said in his best James Brown impersonation, “I feel good”. That got a laugh. Edge made his way to me and shook my hand again and signed my CD. There were so many people shoving things at Edge to sign that he tried to sign my CD twice. Bono and Edge were so accommodating…thrilled to have met them. It was interesting spending the day at the hotel. We got to see how they prepare for the bands departure. All their luggage and some instruments were loaded into a van. It seemed like an endless stream of items being loaded. We also watched Brian prepare for the band to come out and watched the police organize themselves for escorting Bono and Edge. Thanks everyone for making this possible!

Very nice account-thanks so much for posting! :) I have been meaning to write down my experience, but haven't yet...it was so nice to wait with you outside the stadium the day before the show and at the hotel in Denver the day of! Through rain and chilling wind and hours of standing, I wouldn't have changed a thing-except I would hope to have said more to Bono.

I just wish I didn't freeze up in front of Bono when he came by. He actually stood in front of me and focused on me instead of signing for others--I had his full attention!  He even said "Oh, Adam signed" ...and I could have said "he did yesterday" which maybe could have started a chat. But no...didnt say anything. And all I could manage to say is "Welcome back. I'm so glad you're well. Thank you for your time." Then I realized he was looking right into my eyes and that was it...I could say no more. I don't know if he could even hear me when I said my few words...he just clasped my hands when he realized I wasn't saying anything more..with a look like 'poor girl' (my interpretation ;) ). Then he moved on your way and further on and suddenly my courage came back, but he was already gone before I could say anything more. But to have him actually focus on my and touch my hand was magical...it was certainly a beautiful day and an amazing trip :) Thanks again for posting :)

Hey Margaret...is that you? I am glad you were able to get your wish with Bono. In fact, the best picture I have of Bono, I think is when he is looking at you. I am trying to upload it here but it won't take it. I will keep trying. I have been sick for the last 3 days...possibly strep throat. Darn airplanes...they always get me sick! Keep in touch.
