"Mercy" or "North Star" to be on Transformers 3 soundtrack???

It could officially qualify for a Best Song Oscar, an award you know they're dying to win someday, especially after having lost to Eminem.  The long-term strategy might be to give Paramount the song, but don't have them put it on the soundtrack.  If the song gets nominated, it gets more attention.  If it wins, so much the better, because people will be more familiar with it and might be inclined to buy the new album (whatever and whenever that'll be).  And Paramount knows how to market their stuff for nominations at the end of the year.

Wish it were used in a better movie, but that's another argument.

I think 'North Star' can now be put into that category of songs which will 100% definitely (Or at least 90%) see a U2 release at some point in some form, along with Every Breaking Wave and Mercy.  

I think Mercy and North Star would make pretty good B-sides.

Maybe when they do the NLOTH remaster they will put those on there as outtakes?
U2 need to go back to the drawing board on their next album and dream it all up again, not use outtakes from NLOTH. Although I like most of those songs, I think they need to raise the bar one last time in their career. I have faith.

All right, I have a plan. There's this crappy theater near me and they wouldn't notice if someone "walked in" to a movie they didn't pay for, so I'm going to go to that theater, sneak in at the beginning of the movie and hear North Star, go see a different movie (one that I payed to see), and then come back at the credits and hear the song again.

Of course, my sister might want to see this so I might be dragged to it.  And they'll probably do a Rifftrax for it (mp3 commentary where the film is made fun of)

I agree with you, it does seem likely we'll see North Star on the next album.
However, whilst it's always nice to hear new material (even if it is in a michael bay film), i don't like the idea of U2 basically 'leaking' a key song at least a year and a half before an album release. I wish they'd just release a small, understated EP now, and have all new material for the next release.

  Well that's a new twist!

Given that 'North Star' was first debuted in August (And may be from as long ago originally as 2004) and the RedOne sessions didn't begin until later as far as we know... plus what Adam's said about these sessions... I wonder what this means.

1) There is clearly an Eno/Lanois version and a RedOne version- but we don't know if the former was finished.
2) Could the end of the RedOne sessions mean the death of North Star? Or is it just the death of this 'mix' of North Star, hence they are releasing it in this way? OR are they thinking about putting the mix on their next album, even if that album is mostly produced by Danger Mouse? Or just holding it in reserve for some future album
3) Do they even know themselves yet?
