Older songs that could fit with the mood of the next tour
« on: February 10, 2009, 11:34:33 PM »
On the last couple of tours, it seems like U2 has highlighted the newer songs, but dug into the catalog to find a few select older ones that fit in with the new material.  One example is "Stories for Boys merged into Vertigo, another would be the inclusion of Miss Sarajevo into the later legs of the Vertigo tour.  So I was wondering whether you thought of any that would fit with the mood of the new album (as well as we can tell based on "Boots", the 30 sec. clips, the beach clips, and the hype.  Also, no putting in ones like "Acrobat" unless you can truly justify why it fits in with the new tour.

I was just listening to "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" and thought that would fit in well with the feel of the new album and perhaps they would play it on the new tour.  It has been played before as a bit more than a snippet, but I think the full version could work well.

Any other ideas?

Good post...first songs that pops in my head for Boots would be Wire, same kind of rhythm and tempo.
A Sort of Homecoming and Fez-Being Born fit togther snugly.

that would be keeping with TUF sound that is being rumoured to be the new album .id love to hear those two songs live again. The connection with ground beneath her feet i get to ,one of the clips i saw on a video of the sessions in morocco they were playing a bit of music which was very ground beneath her feet sounding !

OK, I asked others to fully justify why a song would fit, and then I didn't do that myself.

I thought that TGBHF had almost a Moroccan or middle eastern feel to the instruments used - (evidently a pedal steel guitar).  the song is very somber, yet uplifting in spots, and I see that in some of the clips or the album as we currently understand it.  Overall, I thought it fit in well with the tones in the clips, and I saw it being linked to some of the new ones.

I'd also love to hear Ultraviolet, but I am not sure that there are enough similarities or tie ins.  Maybe UF or One Tree Hill, but maybe that is me just hoping.

I'd like to hear the album first before I can give you anything that can be justified.

I'd have to hear the slbum first, but judging from what we've heard so far I'm gonna say Unforgettable Fire and Staring at the Sun.

"Acrobat" might actually work in front of GOYB; as in, "don't let the bastards grind you down, get on your boots instead" - combination of defiance and proactivity.

Alternatively, with "Stand Up Comedy".

Monday night on French radio NRJ, Adam may have tipped a back catalogue track for the tour.  When asked "What is the one piece of music that defines U2?", Adam apparently answered "Drowning Man."  (Source u2log.com)

So of course I played Drowning Man and liked the possibilities.  It would work quite right as the closing track of a 22 song set.

I think Adam's comment is more autobiographical, unfortunately it's not an indication of future live tunes, he said the same song in 1988 !! On the Late Late show with Gay Byrne.
