50/50 Chance of New U2 Music Next Year?

It sounds like Edge has been talking about U2's future plans with Brian Hiatt of Rolling Stone, and Edge seems to be saying there's a 50/50 chance of a new U2 album (or new U2 songs in some form) in 2012. Hiatt tweeted this Edge quote a couple hours ago:

U2 2012? "It's quite likely you might hear from us next year," Edge tells me in next @Rollingstone. "But it's equally possible you won't."

Adam has previously told Rolling Stone that U2 was targeting late 2012 for its next album. Bono told Hot Press that it would "be probably next fall."

Sigh. On the one hand I think, "Yeah, riiight." But on the other I ask, "What possible reason would Edge have to get our hopes up like this?"

To keep U2 in the news for reasons other than Bono and their tax arrangements?   He might also simply be referring to more side-projects.

Not sure about this  :-\, I really want a new record, but only if the songs are up to previous standards. I didn't think EBW, NS etc were that strong to be honest and hope they start from scratch.

If the extra 3 months spent on NLOTH prove anything its that you can't polish a turd.

Cheers

If their scheduling habits from the last few years persist then don't expect an actual album until 2013. 2014 at the latest. It's almost offensive how they've been BS'ing fans like this since the "Songs Of Ascent" rumors days.

I suppose it all depends what reflection time for them post the tour does to their thinking about either current and not finished material that they discussed during the tour. Perhaps they are reviewing the Bono speech in a different light? Who knows!?

I think they will do a single/ep type thing - try some things out perhaps?

But yeah unlikely would be my guess.

Those four just have a tendency on postponing and postponing deadlines, so I'm not getting any hopes up anymore until I have that CD in my hands.

But otherwise those are encouraging news!!

1. They wanted to release a quick second album after NLOTH
2. They have a lot of material - apparently
3. The album was almost finished during the 360 Tour
4. Dave Burton was in the process of wrapping up the U2 project

.......and now we are back to 50/50 chances next year????

I am not going to be entertained by their stories anymore. I'm just going to accept that NLOTH was their last album - until proven wrong...

Somewhat encouraging, but we're going to need at least a little more evidence before anyone should get too excited.

Not going to get my hopes up as the odds were more considerable than 50/50 for the past two years and we got  Bo Diddley squat. Although now that Spiderman can walk on its own two feet I guess it'll be easier for Adam and Larry to get some 'quality alone time' with Benson and Edges.

Oh, Edge. If only they realised how many people hang off every single side comment as definitive evidence of something.

Well, that's a more positive comment than what Bono said in that other interview about us not hearing from the band for awhile...
