JT era Bono makes me think of the movie The Dark Knight.  I say that because everytime I see video of him during that era I just think "Why so serious?"  I wonder if somebody told him he shouldn't take himself so seriously and that's what lead to the change in direction in the 1990's.

Sometimes I wish he'd take himself a little more seriously nowadays.  *glances at picture of middle-age man posing with bikini-teens*

Ah, but he got bit in the ass for that--admittedly, by the media, not the fans--in the late '80s.  I think it really scarred him, since the ultra-earnest Bono has never returned, except arguably at the pulpit on issues of world poverty and AIDS.

So...I think I'm gonna have to say I like 2001-2005 Bono, because that was the first Bono I knew. Yes, I'm a young'un too. My first concert was Vertigo, and I also really like him in Slane Castle. I'm dressed up for Halloween today as Vertigo Bono, except with Fly-ish shades.

This is my FAVORITE Bono! I was actually thinking of this era before I saw this picture. I really don't even need to say why I like it! LOL

Definitely "Pop" era - sexy, fun, lots of energy and less preachy.  Don't get me wrong - I love that he has a strong social conscious, but gets a little much when you watch the same social preaching over and over in the dvd concerts (I don't have to skip through anything in the PopMart DVD - except maybe the fat dancing lady).

It's great that there's been such a diverse response. I'm surprised no one's mentioned Unforgettable Fire/Live Aid Bono. He's my second favourite, and not just in terms of looks. His voice from those years is gorgeous, and there's a "je ne sais quoi" about him that's beyond charisma.

So you did! My apologies. Yes, I remember agreeing with you about the power of his voice. It's an interesting idea that from 84-86 Bono's voice was even more powerful than from 87-89. I think there might be some truth to that.
