It's an underrated gem if anything. It's also one of those few early songs (Tomorrow too) that really breaks away from the angry, confused, young rebellious post punk stuff and shines a light on the road ahead. It would also comfortably fit on any album and not seem out of place.

It can't be that underrated because it looks like its booked a spot in the last 32.

Even England managed that.

... and yes, it is underrated, outside of here I've never heard anything about it, and even that seemed to come duly after Adam citing it as his favourite U2 song. It's stock has considerably risen the last few years though, no doubt. Same goes for The First Time.

'Outside of here' though, virtually everything that hasn't made it onto the Greatest Hits CDs could be considered underrated. (FWIW, Drowning Man is also beloved on Interference) 'Outside of here' - meaning U2 fandom- no-one knows that it exists. But if that's your criteria for underrated, then 'A Day Without Me' is underrated. :P

But that isn't my criteria, it was in response to your criteria of why it isn't underrated (the fans love it) I see it as a song that is better than it's status - and that is U2's fault,  it's only been in their catalogue since 1983!

Not overrated. If a song still gives you goosebumps after all these years, especially done live, it's not overrated. Like I've repeatedly stated, I like all these songs save IGWSHA, which obviously I need to revisit based on everyone on this board seemingly adoring it, and I love some I couldn't vote for due to the limit of 2 choices.

Let's deal. If I shall endeavor to give IGWSHA another shot, can I ask you to give The First Time another listen, with headphones?  ;D

Once again, I never said that RTSS is a bad song. It is incredibly beautiful, but for me it lacks something which the other songs in this group has. RTSS is brilliant live but on the record it is too quiet and there isn't enough passion behind it.

The other songs in this category have the passion on the record, which means that U2 doesn't have to make up for it with a stunning live performance.

Think of the vocals from Bono on Ultraviolet and the bass from Adam on DYFL. Compare that to the studio version of RTSS and Ultraviolet and DYFL win easily for me.

Maybe we're jumping the gun, Drowning Man could still go out here.

DYFL would be a suitable replacement.  :)

It's apples and oranges to me among the types of songs these are and the live and studio versions. It all depends which fruit you like and I like them all. I still would never call any of these songs, save one, overrated.
