Well Unknown Caller is sort of experimental (that chorus was quite a non-U2 thing to do), as was Boots even if it didn't work out great. They may be closer to breaking new ground than we are giving them credit for.

Cedars and Fez were quite experimental too. In a good way too!

Fez and Cedars are the experimental songs on NLOTH, imo. I just felt like UC was an attempt at "hip" lyrics that failed miserably. Like Dave Lee Roth referencing Facebook on the new VH album. lol.

it will forever break my heard that Fez isn't NLOTH's opener. to be honest i wouldnt mind the song No Line being 2nd as awkard as it owuld be to have "2 opening songs"

Don't forget White As Snow. A song set to the music of a classic hymn with a French Horn solo.

Yup. Boots is a more experimental lead single than any outside the 90s. It's just not all that good. An interesting lesson totally ignored by those who still see 'experimenting' as a placebo to fix all the band's problems.

Boots wasn't really that experimental. Let's not fool ourselves. The main riff follows the Vertigo riff formula to an embarrassing level.

I, for one, hope U2 never stop experimenting with their sound, whether they hit or miss.

Less safe than Beautiful Day or Vertigo- or any of the 80s lead singles for that matter though. The speed, the beat, the 'funky' element to it (Admittedly done badly) .

MOS was experimental for U2, IMHO, and should have released that as the lead single if they had really wanted to be daring or experimental in terms of the lead single release.
