For me, it was when I was in my dad's car at night ( I was 9 or so), when I listened to With or without you. It grew onto me.
But I became madly in love with U2 when I listened to the Best of 1980-1990 greatest hits album. That did the trick.

@brrrger: Out of curiosity, was there a reason to hate the band before discovering? Or do you actually mean "dislike"?

I must have been about 12 or 13.  I heard With or Without You on the radio and thought to myself, I really like this song...a lot.  Anyway, when Beautiful Day hit the air waves years later.  I hated it.  I thought it sucked.  Mind you, I was 16.  However, I sat down and looked at the lyrics and took it all in.  That's when I fell in love with U2.  I looked up some of their older music and realized they were the ones who wrote With or Without You, One, Streets, and so many other songs that I heard maybe once or twice and never bothered to look up the band.  Ever since, I've been obsessed.

At the risk of sounding existential, "Why not U2?"

Seriously, I was in high school when Boy came out.  I heard I Will Follow and thought, cool song.  October was completely under the radar for me - my dad died the same month it was released *ironically, SYCMIOYO is playing on The Spectrum as I type this* but War came out while I was working at the bar on campus.  As a DJ, I could play whatever I wanted, and I did get requests for SBS and NYD - I liked them.  Then UF came out and I played a few songs from that one, too.  I liked JT, but was busy with school, then I got married and had kids.  I'd always wanted to see U2 live, which I did in 2005.  It was then that I became obsessed with their music.  Finally seeing some of my favourite songs performed live really did it for me.
