Locked groove on Zooropa vinyl
« on: September 12, 2012, 08:59:18 PM »
I recently found and bought an original 1993 copy of Zooropa on vinyl. It's in near mint condition and I just finished giving it a spin from start to finish. Much to my surprise, at the end of side 2, that ringing alarm sound continues indefinately in a locked groove. I had no idea U2 had done that! I thought I knew everything there was to know about U2 albums, not to mention singles and bootlegs and everything in between. But I had never read or heard about this and am wondering if this comes as a surprise to people on this forum as well. Zooropa is one of my favourite U2 albums and there's now another element to it that makes me like it even more! It's really cool to hear that alarm continue endlessly; it works perfectly as a way to end the album.

Well, I agree it's quite a jarring sound but lots of things about that album are jarring and disjointed. That's part of what I love about it. Did either of you know about this locked groove?

I have the Zooropa vinyl, but I haven't gotten into it yet.  Thanks to your discovery, now I'll try it and see what happens...

I've never heard of the loop either.  That's cool.

"If you leave Zooropa playing for about one minute after "The Wanderer", you will hear an alarm going off. This is the same alarm which warns radio DJ's when there is a 10 second air silence. Some editions of Zooropa don't have the DJ alarm at the end -- the Brazillian pressing, for example."
