They could still release CD, vinyl and lmited edition versions that you'd have to pay for.

I think it would help get the band 'free' (sort-of) publicity compared to the costs of mega-marketing.

Everyone would be talking about it - it would crash the internet!

Can't see u2 giving up the money.

Although I cant imagine there is much money to be made from a single these days and it could be a 'loss leader' to help shift the album - but for me u2 are not that kind of band to do it

They should give away a copy of their new album with every concert ticket.  Then bethere can claim that U2's new music is hugely popular with 7 million shipped.

No.  A new U2 single is news in and of itself.  It will be all over the internet and radio regardless.  Giving it away will give people the impression "well, I already got the single, what else do I need?"  Yeah, a lot of people will download it illegally, but there are still those who don't go through those channels for their music.

I hope the new album has a download copy as part of buying the vinyl LP. I don't know why they didn't do that for NLOTH. No more 84 formats, streamline it, keep it simple. Don't overload the market.

But there's a lot of pent up demand, to go with the frustration, and limited supply.

U2 aren't daft - they know that the diehards will part with 30 quid for the 'superdeluxe' offering

No other previous album had that many formats:

CD
CD + BOOK
CD + BOOK IN CASE
LP
DOWNLOAD

Ridiculous.

They cynically target the completists market.

^Thats a really good idea. With the price of concert tickets these days they could surely afford it.

The only problem is most U2 fans would already have the album by the time of the show

Does anyone know that if a single is offered for free then it wouldn't count towards sales for any chart positions? Therefore ruling it out for the charts, mtv-type and chart-style tv shows.

You know what would be the best marketing strategy?

Make the first single good.

 ;)

Interesting thought, though.

I'll start from War when the band where 'earning their stripes':

War = New Year's Day = great!
TUF = Pride = great!
Joshua Tree = WOWY = brilliant!
Rattle and Hum = Desire = great!
Achtung Baby = The Fly = amazingly great!
Zooropa = Numb = good but not great!
Passengers (if need be) = Miss Sarajevo = beautiful!
Pop = Discotheque = good but not great!
ATYCLB = Beautiful Day = one of their best from a so-so album!
HTDAAB = Vertigo = great!
NLOH = GOYB = erm...well....uh....erm....pass
