I want an experience.  I listen occasionally to Weezer's Green album and it's fairly short and I love it.

That album's a great example of taking quick, punchy songs and wrapping them into a 28 minute ride. It's so much fun.

As long as the songs are good, it doesn't bother me.

As long as it is not like Stark Raving Mad's America MX album.  30 songs in 28 minutes.

A shorter, tighter, album is better than a bloated album with 3-4 filler songs.

The advent of the CD, which allowed single-disc albums to run up to 70 minutes, led to a lot of mediocre stuff being released in the 90s and 2000s by a lot of artists that would have otherwise been left as b-sides or in the vault.

More is not always better.

It's time for U2 to reinvent music and release 5 albums simultaneously.

The Rolling Stones - Out of Our Heads - Running Time 29:36
Key Songs - Satisfaction, The Last Time, Heart of Stone, That's How Strong My Love Is, Play With Fire

The Doors - Morrison Hotel - Running Time 37:05
Key Songs - Roadhouse Blues, Peace Frog, Waiting For The Sun

The Beatles - Revolver - Running Time 35:01
Key Songs - Eleanor Rigby, Tomorrow Never Knows, Taxman, Good Day Sunshine

The Who - My Generation - Running Time 36:13
Key Songs - My Generation, The Kids Are Alright, The Ox

INXS - Kick - Running Time 39:54
Key songs - Never Tear Us Apart, Guns in the Sky, The Loved One, Devil Inside, New Sensation

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run - Running Time 39:26
Key Songs - Born to Run, Backstreets, Tenth Ave Freezeout, Thunder Road, JungleLand

Aerosmith - Rocks - Running Time 34:31
Key Songs - Back in the Saddle, Last Child, Sick as a Dog, Nobody's Fault

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars - Running Time 38:37
Key Songs - Five Years, Moonage Daydream, Starman, Ziggy Stardust, Suffragatte City, Rock n Roll Suicide

Some of the best albums ever have been under 40 minutes. As long as the songs are high quality it wouldn't bother me one bit if U2 put out an album as good as Born to Run or Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

Yes, I don't disagree with your observation about any of the albums you cite.  They are not all my bag, but I totally agree that they all rank highly in any reasonable/objective analysis.

However, I think your argument is a bit slippery, as I think you're employing a sleight to deflect us from the contextual consideration.  After all, apart from a debut album in that list, most of them were released about a year after each respective group's previous album, weren't they?  I think that there are a couple that were in the second calendar year?  I would have no issue with U2 releasing a 'short' album as a follow up to a previous album: "Songs of Ascent" could reasonably have been a 'short' (I think that someone else has pointed out that Zooropa had fewer tracks than usual, which seems entirely understandable, given the context).

However, I'm with Tarahumara (sp?  Apologies if I have that wrong) on this one.  I think a short album after such a long period would provide further grist to the mill to those who have suggested that the U2 well is running dry.

I went with the third option.  I'd be happy to hear any new U2, but I'd have misgivings if they were to produce a short album at this stage in their career.

Back then, bands put out an album and toured every year.

We're talking about a band in their 50's. We are not gonna get an album every year or even every other year. Sometimes a concise album with every track being great is better then an album that has too much in it and gets long winded.

If you're going to believe that the only reason the album would be less than 40 minutes is that the well is running dry, then the more (most) important question is: would you accept that?

Even younger bands don't tour and put out an album every year.  It's too expensive these days.

I voted option #3, but if they promised and delivered on a followup album within 2 years of this album's release date I'd be much less upset.  8)
