I admit when I first heard this I did not think too much of it. But after several listens it has really grown on me. I love now.

I have no clue why its getting so much negative press. Its their best slower tempo songs since Running To Stand Still IMO. At least the best since Stay.

Because it's pretentious.

How, exactly, is it "pretentious?"  The word comes from the same root as "pretend."  Do you think it's "pretentious" because Bono is "pretending" to be a dying soldier in the song?

I'm so tired of people using that word to describe Bono and U2. >:(

I was driving in my car when I heard it the first time and started to cry, I thought it was so beautiful.  And I like the comparison to "Running to Stand Still" - apt!

Agreed. See my previous post.

And frankly I'm tired of people using that word for anything. It has occasional legitimate use, but like a Coldplay song, I haven't heard a good one in years.

well, this is the internet, people don't actually explain themselves when calle dout

Pretentious ? - Why ? - Silence
Mercy unfinished - really ? what part would you change and what would you like to see done ? - Silence
Relevance - (insert artist here) is no longer relevant  - Really ? Define relevance - Silence
Pop unfinished - Really ? Which parts would you change and ho wwoul dyou change them ? - silence

Ah the internet - mindless rhetoric abounds, actual thought is often lacking

In some cases, it may be a prerequisite!

I think this is a lovely song.  Bono isn't often in story-telling mode.  This is lyrically new territory for him, and I think he pulls it off.  I love that he uses Veni Emmanuel.  It's an Advent hymn, and as such, is appropriate to the winter-themed song.  (Sorry.  The church organist in me is coming out.)

Hearing it once, its the opposite of pretentious to me; very warm and cold at the same time, personal, beautiful, accessible.

I haven't heard the whole thing yet...but I really liked the 30 second clip. It seems really haunting.

It's starting to grow on me, after analyzing the lyrics and their intended meaning (Afghanistan soldier) better. :)

I didn't realize either of these things. Now it's beyond gorgeous! And sad...

I love the way he sings the word "in" in the line "As boys we would go hunting in the woods." Beautiful.
