The Daily Beast Lambasts New Album as Lousy
« on: September 14, 2014, 08:20:31 AM »
Interestingly, the article states that if the album would have been anyone else it would be great. However, it's lousy because it's U2 partly due to it being "a departure" from previous work and does not live up to their past work.

Great if anyone else had done it? So much for criticism of the actual music...

They're not really knocking on the band completely. They're just saying for a band like U2, it's unacceptable to put out an album like this but for others it'd be a big success. They got this one right.

The comment on The Unforgettable Fire is way way off the mark.

The writer complains about the fact that a simple melody goes off in a tangent with Bono lyrically rambling or whatever - he highlights Sleep Like A Baby Tonight as one of the culprits. But surely if he delved into what Bono was saying , the lyrics give far more depth to the song than simply avoiding more complex lyrics in favour of fitting words into a simple melody?

U2 have always balanced out melody with good lyrics - Pop is an example where Bono doesn't sing the most memorable melodies but the lyrics are good on that album/.

It's not like they didn't have enough time to work on it.

Once again, the highlights and "mistakes" are different from other reviews.

yoda you're in the minority here; most fans are saying it's their best album since POP; personally I thnk it's their best since AB

I do think it's their best album in years, but here's the thing...for me all I care about are great songs rather than a complete album

That without a general reboot couldn't happen, Yoda.
