U2 has won 22 grammys, a record for a band. However, when you look at their grammy tally by album, you get the idea about how relevant grammys are to artistic relevance:

Album - Wins (Nominations)

All that you can't leave behind 7 (12)
How to dismantle an Atomic Bomb 7 (7)
Joshua Tree 3 (5)
Zooropa 2 (2)
Rattle and Hum 1 (3)
Achtung, Baby 1 (2)
No line on the horizon 0 (3)
POP 0 (2)
Boy 0 (0)
October 0 (0)
WAR 0 (0)
Unforgettable Fire 0 (0)

U2 have been mainstream at least since 'The Joshua Tree', it's not news anymore...

Mainstream? You're upset that the largest rock band of the last thirty years is mainstream? That's quite a contradiction.....

not at all. it was a response to someone saying they wanted to hear Bono give a f**k the mainstream speech. the irony of which would have been of ticket price proportions.

Yeah even that quote was clearly implying that they wanted to be *part* of the mainstream, just disrupting it from within.

Nice Billboard piece.  But this assessment seems odd: "U2 continues to surprise by returning to a more raw rock sound."

The endless tweaking, refining and general overproduction are anything but 'raw'.  I love the album, but 'raw' it is not.

I'm not really surprised.  I don't think SOI is getting much notice as an album.  The Apple thing distracted everyone from the music.

I don't think I fully understand how the Grammy's work.  Do the musicians/record companies get to choose where they're going to seek a nomination?  There is a fine line between Alternative and Rock music categories, which I think does a disservice to musicians.  Beck in the rock category?  Black Keys in Rock and Jack White in Alternative?

It's a bit odd.  If U2 would have made it to Album of the Year, they might have had a better shot.  I don't think they stand much of a chance for Rock Album.  As it is, I think Beck has the best album among the Rock Album nominees, but it won't surprise me if Black Keys or Tom Petty win.  A Tom Petty win would be more of acknowledgment for not winning much in the past like U2 was with HTDAAB.

The quote says 'a more raw rock sound'. It didn't say it was the personification of raw rock.

And compared to NLOTH it is 'a more rock sound'.

Understand?

This is how the Grammys state the voting works:

Thanks for posting that spicy. It's more involved and honorable than I had figured.

Eureka.  Thank you Grand Master.  I believe I am now on the verge of full sensory comprehension.
