If there was a fee through the U2.com website to watch all shows (like an advanced subscription- not too super expensive) then those of us who can't go could happily watch live concerts streamed. That's another thing that is never going to happen.

Prince on the hit n run tour did it best ... About 10 minutes before the show the band came out and politely asked the crowd to put their phones away as they wanted to play a gig to people not phones ... The security then enforced the polite request by shining a torch into the camera lense ... A further breach then they were escorted out if the building and another fan was let in at a reduced price

It's not just about personal freedom. It's also about people around, especially behind, the person with the camera. I'm already at a disadvantage when gigantically tall people decided to take up the front rows. Now I'm imagining having to look around phones and selfie sticks too.   But I know people just give a damn about people around them. I've been nailed in the head with too many flying elbows to count.

Maybe it wasn't so bad when I went to 360 in Moscow. I don't remember a whole bunch of people taking video all the time. I took a little bit for memory. But even when I got home to my city, I was able to find a video for every song on youtube, despite not feeling like there were cameras everywhere.

It was raining leading up to and during the concert. Before the concert some people started putting up umbrellas. So I started a chant "no umbrellas" (it had a better ring in Russian). People joined in the chant quickly and the umbrellas came down. There was nothing to block my view for the show, even though I am not very tall.

Perhaps if people begin to block your view just start a chant, "put away the phones, put away the phones". If enough people agree with you, the chant will be successful, and the peer pressure alone will make people put their phones away. It's worth a try.

Perhaps the problem has become a lot worse in America than I have imagined. When I go to concerts here in Russia, and we do get some international acts coming through, I have not felt like there has been a problem here.

People in front of you.

The last few concerts I was at... everyone had their phone out. It wasn't just an odd one or two people.

Hah.

i didnt claim it was ONLY the 2 people in front of you and no one else in the venue..but does it really bug you that people on the other side of the venue have their phones out? i mean...you can't control that, but you could kindly tell the people in front of you their arms and phones are blocking you. that was my point.

At a Rolling Stones show in Las Vegas in 2013, a person in front of me held their IPad in the air recording the show. Distraction for everyone.

I am all for keeping phones away. The other hassle is people yelling into them during the show; particularly the quiet songs. Many small venue shows have banned them during the past year. And, they are enforcing it. Hopefully a movement for the future.

I'm fine with using it to take a few pictures or something. It's the people who constantly have it up that annoy me in particular.

Why would you want to watch the show through a screen when you're there?

I think the band themselves may find a way to enforce a policy similar to Prince's, and they'll enact it fast.

Or better yet, come up with some happy medium. Hopefully they can. It's just that phojnes are a lot bigger than ciggie lighters, everyone has one,  and they stay up for the WHOLE SHOW..if I were a bootlegger I'd be a little ticked b/c everyone else's phone would be blocking mine..esp if I'm short.

I don't see how it bothers anyone. I'm there to watch show/listen to music, not watch other people on their phones. That's like the rude people that tell me to "sit down" at concerts and sporting events. I paid money for the concert, worry about yourself.

Idk man, you have to look at the flip side of that coin too. I paid to be there and i choose to sit, i shouldnt have to ask anyone to move out of my way so i can see it. they are worrying about themselves, maybe they have an issue and can't stand for the whole show like you can? im just saying theres more to it than lazy people not standing at a show.

it bothers people because, like standing in front of someone, the arms and phones block your view. At least thats what bothers me about it.

Well I guess I don't see how people can complain that "American crowds" are sooooooooo lame because nobody stands and then when people do stand, they get told to sit down. I guess damned if you do, damned if you don't.

But DS if you were sitting behind me, I'd gladly sit down for you ;) (or perhaps trade you spots so I can stand and you can sit) :)

With the Periscope App, people can stream the whole concert live in real time to other people's phones.
