Bad. I haven't listened to Lemon with headphones recently enough to comment on the styrofoam sound. Though I never had a problem with it in the past.

Don't expose yourself to that sound. Just don't. Remain in blissful ignorance.

The whole vibe of Bad on the album is weird to me. Restrained. Yet there's a soft warmth to it that also makes a lot of sense, especially when I listen on my well-worn UF vinyl. The live versions are just much crisper and more alive. They have a bite, especially on Larry's part.

Haha, duly noted.

Restrained is a great word choice, same for Streets on record. But live, they both take off. And especially Bad - I feel like it's one of the few songs that Bono (anymore, anyway) really lets himself get lost in.

I feel like Streets suffers from it less because the tone of the instruments is at least better. The extension of Streets live takes the song somewhere else, though. That part is so good, so exciting, so powerful to make you want to run around a large area and jump at the end once you hit the "loooove, loooove, loooove," that I miss it so much every time I listen to the record.

I'd like to add some disdain for the WOMP WOMP WOMP background noises in Electrical Storm.

Oh absolutely. But the construction of the song (it's a bit more strict in its verse/chorus/verse format than Bad) doesn't lend itself as well to Bono going into trance mode live.

What NO that's one of my favorite songs ever I'm not going to even listen for these WOMPs.

What's so great about Bad is how the structure is so loose. I can never nail down where it's going to go.

WOMP WOMP WOMP. They creep up as the song goes on...

The single mix is a safe listen in the WOMP regard.

But not the William O mix? That one's my favorite.

There are no womps in the single mix. The William Orbit mix is a certifiable womp farm.

They just really get in the way of the guitar. It's like an overzealous, bassy Pac-Man trying to eat the Edge's solo.

Now that is quite the simile. :D

But I actually just figured out what you're talking about, and I really don't mind them. Though you should go look up Answer Guy's review of HTDAAB (in the article archives on the atu2 homepage) - he talks about Bomb heavily reusing that same ES solo riff.

I think that's the funniest description I've ever seen of something in a U2 song. ;D

I agree! What happened to this thread? Now we are all talking about WOMPS and an overzealous Pacman.
