Issues with Crystal Ballroom live
« on: July 01, 2015, 03:51:12 AM »
Don't get me wrong. I love the Crystal Ballroom.

But... is it me... or does someone just press play on a backing track here. Bono seems at bit taken by surprised at the very beginning.

TCB is as unfinished live as it is on record. It's 2/3 of a potentially great song.

Note to Bono: don't try to lead singalong during edge's solo, just watch and worship.

You can't really hear the backing track. The song works just find with bass, drums, guitar and Bono's vocals. All the beautiful melodies still come out. No its not the same as the recording, but that's understandable. I hope they keep this song in the setlist. The best song from album with exception of Iris in my opinion!

I have been saying that for years. Ever watched any live version of New Years Day? If I were Edge I would go over there and smack him out.

The beginning was weird in fact, but the rest was pretty good, imo, I'd love to see it as a staple.

But...

Bono does that a lot. Rant over Edge's solo's. Even when they were recording Cedarwood Rd, Bono started singing over Edge's solo. But that kind of works as it builds up the song.

But live, Bono can't help himself. No matter what song it is.

The backing track is a critical part to the song on record, and while I heard it softly in the background, it needs to be much louder overall

I thought the entire song was a letdown live. I was three people back from the e-stage.

The song has been played live once.  So far, most of the rehearsals have been without Bono - except for the last one.  Naturally, as they work on all the songs, they get better live.  Look at the reviews from the 2 Vancouver shows, compared with the more recent ones.  I agree that a volume issue on the backing track is one they should be able to fix pretty easily, but shouldn't we give them a chance to do that and tweak it a bit?

I didn't like the singalong over the guitar solo, but I got the sense that it was his way to engage the audience on a song that they all weren't familiar with.

i agree. they should not be ashamed of any backing track, they are always a necessity if they want to reproduce a song that resembles it's original recording. turn it up.

it's one of bono's most annoying habits. we don't always want to hear him on every part of a u2 song. on the last tour, his singing over the hammond organ part of unknown caller almost ruined the song for me. there are many other examples where he either talks or sings when an instrumental part kicks in.  let edge's solo be a SOLO!

there are just as many people who are there for edge's playing as there are for bono's singing.
