I think maybe Patti Smith ruined a U2 gig 10 years ago by being a not great support, so clearly, 10 years later when she guests a song with them, she must automatically ruin it now? Nope. She was on form tonight. That was a great show. No debate.

Also 10 years ago she came on and performed Instant Karma with the band which was a rare and special treat for those attending.   Anyone who lets a support band overshadow their experience of the headline act is very sad.  If you don't like it go to the bar and come back for the headline act.

I wasn't there and have not yet seen the videos, but I have to admit I am not surprised by the Patti Smith comments.  She opened in NYC on Vertigo and what I saw then (11/22/2005) was the worst opening act I've ever imagined.  Black Eyed Peas were better, if that is any reference.

Anyway, on that night she rejoined the band onstage for Instant Karma, and it was anything but.  She looked either wasted or having other issues, the band cut the set short and they all left the stage early and abruptly, 2 or 3 songs short of the printed setlist.

I would have been pretty bummed to have to endure Patti again, she is terrible.

She was good and well received

She was horrible in NYC during Vertigo tour I think.  I can't remember what song she played with the band, but it was really bad.

I was about to post the performance, as I think it was played better than many U2 workhorses these days, even if it is a very basic NYC rock song. Smith really was on fire and the band had the energy to match her. I'm not a fan of Springsteen-esque anthems, but it worked this time.

Plus, Smith's street cred made this news over on Pitchfork, which has been careful not to post anything about the new tour so far.

I thought it was a great gig and loved the surprise ending. It isn't a great Patti Smith song but she and the band played it well and were totally in the moment. I saw them play One as an final song at MSG when Bono was so irked by the crowds singing that he stopped and made the audience re-start twice. That's a bad final song !

il_capo (and markreed) - what is even more sad is misreading or distorting a post.  I did not say her opening act ruined a U2 gig.  I simply stated that she was horrible when I saw her, and she later helped cut short an otherwise excellent show on the Vertigo Tour.  Consequently, I am not surprised to hear poor reviews from her appearance last night.

I am surprised at the backlash here... as if a U2 gig is sacred and can't be critiqued... wow.

It is all opinions and hey I like stating mine!

But as someone who was there i can honestly say it was a good performance in my book of what isn't a very good song really - but it sounded good, band were punchy and it went down a storm.

that's awesome.  I wish I were in London for these shows TBH... I loved the openers back in May but it sounds like they are really on form...

Patti Smith is a legend, so glad to hear that she was on and well received.
