My thoughts are that he could pull it off.

I don't think so. He's an adequate singer, but doesn't have a lot of emotional depth to his voice.

I just wonder if he could stretch his legs a bit and find his own emotional niche after years of being the backup singer

I will say he don't have a lot of resonance to his voice, though

I'm really sorry to bring this name AGAIN in this forum, but it's the name I'm thinking of right now: Chris Martin doesn't have a lot of emotion in his voice either, but Coldplay is a huge success... (sorry again ;D)
I think Edge could do it. His voice is not so dynamic, but is a beautiful voice and sure could improve with some training. It also depends on the song of course, and remember songs can be sung in different octaves...

But it would always be less than Bono's voice, so what would be the point?

I think Edge has a great harmonizing voice.  Pure, clear, blends well, sounds amazing with Bono.  It's a great layer of sound, adds a lot, can't imagine the live sound without it.  But it's not a solo voice to my ears.

Just MHO, of course!

I think he could pull it off and I would love him to do so. As long as it doesn't interfere with his U2 work.

No - simple as that. A great guitarist and a great back up singer..

Listen to Van Diemens land, i dont think he has the ability to go up to a scream and then to a very soft sound like Bono,  my guess is that if he can sing like he did on Last night on earth in the chorus, he could do it, but im not sure if he'll be able to hold out,  Someone mentioned Chris Martin above, well Imo chris martin cant sing and edge can, so edge would go farther, think of the names of the albums

He could of course, he wouldn't try to be Bono though. He is an excellent backing singer, but his voice doesn't project enough volume to scream out songs. His vocals would have to be more subtle and mellow than Bono's.

I think he easily has the talent to sing lead.

Edge covering Pride's chorus during Pop, when Bono lost his voice.
