Edge covering Pride's chorus during Pop, when Bono lost his voice.

Wow, Edge did really good there. I'm sure he could be a lead singer if he wanted to. But the thing is, would he want to? I think he's perfectly content just being a kick butt guitarist and back up. But I guess this thread is about his ability to do so, not whether he would or not   ;D

I don't think so. He's an adequate singer, but doesn't have a lot of emotional depth to his voice.

I just wonder if he could stretch his legs a bit and find his own emotional niche after years of being the backup singer

I will say he don't have a lot of resonance to his voice, though

I thought you were gonna say "I just wonder if he could stretch his legs a bit and do a Kiss impression" lol

I rekon there will be an Edge solo album or two in the pipeline without doubt. Long before U2 are shelved up there with the Stones.

He could of course, he wouldn't try to be Bono though. He is an excellent backing singer, but his voice doesn't project enough volume to scream out songs. His vocals would have to be more subtle and mellow than Bono's.

I adore Edge's voice, but I agree that it just isn't enough of a powerhouse to carry a huge stadium or arena. I can see Edge sitting on a stool in a small venue with an acoustic guitar with me sitting worshippingly at his feet.

Edge could carry a huge show with that clear and gentle voice of his. John Denver did it, and very successfully. Similar in voice -- not style, please don't hurt me.

I think he could do a solo album.

Picking up on the points that he doesn't have the emotional depth in his voice and that he couldn't sing the chorus of 'Pride' - how can anyone really say this when we haven't had the chance to hear him sing properly, with the exception of a lead on the occasional album.

Well of course he could. It would be his music, not a U2 record. I think there would be loads of harmonies and ambience

You can clearly hear on Van Diemen's Land that he definitely has the voice to do a solo. Without a doubt it's gotten better ever since, so I think so.

It probably would be more folk-y or acoustic-y than rock though

Which reinforces my John Denver comment. And let's not forget, John Denver played to audiences of 40,000 successfully.

(And yes, I actually do like John Denver and I clearly don't care who knows.)
