Pop Alternate Titles/Track Listing?
« on: April 11, 2016, 03:43:49 PM »
I'm a huge fan of 90's U2, and I'm definitely a Pop apologist. It's a flawed album, but it's also ballsy, edgy, and fresh. It plays great with repeat listens, also. I think the problem with the album was it was falsely branded. Calling it a "dance" album made it feel like U2 was focused more on catchy beats than thoughtful music. Titling the album "Pop" and making Discotheque the lead single definitely made some people cynical before its release. Plus, Pop is just dull as hell for an album title.

So, to my fellow Pop fans, what do you think would be a better title for the album, and would you alter the track listing at all?

Some ideas I had: PopMart, Velvet, The Playboy Mansion

Alternate track listing:

1) Miami
2) The Playboy Mansion
3) Discotheque
4) Do You Feel Loved
5) Mofo
6) Gone
7) Last Night on Earth
8) Staring at the Sun
9) If God Will Send His Angels
10) If You Wear That Velvet Dress
11) Please
12) Wake Up Dead Man

Honestly, I think Pop is awesome the way it is. The only changes I'd make is putting in the single versions of Discotheque and Please because they're better than the album versions (especially Please).

Wouldn't change a thing really...apart from maybe getting that version of mofo on that video that floats around here on the album (u2's most brilliant recorded moment in my book)

In fact here it is.....so f****** good, wish they had gone with this sound.

I would have added Holy Joe as well thinking about it (such a good song) maybe jibbed IGWSHA or SATS for it.

Agreed and a killer live song.  They got to bring it back.  remember this short clip floating around a few years back when supposedly rehearsed on vertigo but never played.  sounded killer

I spell it backwards, just to be all edgy and subversive.

Pop Muzik (4 minute radio edit)
Mofo
DYFL
Disco (single edit)
IGWSHA
SATS
LNOE (zahn mix)
Gone
Miami
YBR
IYWTVD
Please (single version)
WUDM

this playlist i like the most and its pretty much the same as the album track list with a few big obvious changes

and Staring at the Sun would have been a good title.

Here's mine, I think the album is great as it is, but for the fun of it:

1. Pop Muzik
2. Mofo (the version an tha posted, I just love it so much)
3. Holy Joe
4. Last Night On Earth
5. Gone
6. Discotheque
7. Do You Feel Loved
8. Miami
9. If God Will Send His Angels
10. The Playboy Mansion
11. Staring at the Sun
12. If You Wear that Velvet Dress
13. Please
14. Wake Up Dead Man

I know fourteen songs is a lot, so I'd cut Miami if I had to.

i don't get the hype behind Holy Joe, it's a good b-side but a far cry from album quality song writing.

Didn't know that - thanks for sharing.

I would guess they never played it for the same reasons they polish stuff to death these days.

When I think about the stuff that has made it on to u2 albums post Pop I find your statement there very, very hard to buy into.....opinions and all that though of course...

For me Holy Joe easily outguns the singles u2 lead with post Pop never mind the albums tracks.

Life gets tougher for it when up against the bands 90's output but for me it would have fitted on Pop better than SATS or IGWSHA.

It sounded like it was even going to be better than on POPMART live as they were even trying to play it without any loops and backing tracks which the Popmart live version had.
