The Fly

Not only is it a stellar tune but it was such a radical shift for the band and threw a lot of people for a loop. It's still one of my favorite U2 songs.

Personal favourite is NYD but WOWY is just absolutely timeless and is by far one of their best songs. Don't think I've ever met anyone who dislikes the song (even if that's not always a marker of quality).

The Fly gets an honourable mention.

I've given my vote to NYD - still hear it on the radio 33 years after its release; lead single to the War album that was in a lot of ways the first significant  upward step on their escalation to the biggest band in the world.  Very special mentions to The Fly (one of my very favourite U2 tracks, and the first new U2 song I heard as a fan), Pride (genius delay-decorated guitar riff and celestial vocals), and WOWY (one of the truly great songs and the last nail in the coffin of deniers of U2's late-80s supremacy).

I actually went with A Day Without Me...surprised myself! I think my real choice would be The Fly, but a loose wire in my brain said...something else!

For those of us old enough to remember - U2 was getting a lot of traction due to big sweeping anthems and grand gestures, JT was THE most hotly anticipated album of 1987, so what do they release as a lead single ? WOWY, a slow burner with a murky dark video (MTV was HUGE then, and video was a must-do, almost as anticipated as the physical release) and a haunting lyrically dark song. Totally blindsided everyone, a very radical move at the time.

Yes, The Fly was a radical move also but by then people almost expected U2 to do something different.

Ah how times change.

WOWOY- and I think they should try something similar for the next album.  Obviously The Fly was perfect for AB and showing off their new sound, but its obvious that they need to try something new and that what they've been doing hasn't worked for them on the last three album's lead singles.

While I like Discotheque and enjoyed the music video, perhaps the Pop album would have been better received if they released "Gone" so critics would have called it a dense album instead of a dance album.

I agree that "The Fly" is the choice, but NYD is right on its heels.

I voted for Beautiful Day. It's probably the song they needed the most to succeed out of all the tracks on the list and it worked.

They should've chosen Mofo if they wanted to make an even bolder statement. That's more drastic of a shift from R&H to The Fly even!

Desire, by just a tiny bit over both NYD and Discotheque.
