It's funny how, at the height of their "earnest" phase, they were already basically giving a glimpse of the "irony" schtick they'd use on Zoo TV.

It's kind of painful, really.  It's hard to tell if they're paying any kind of honest tribute to American roots music, or making fun of the whole thing.  I'm not sure there's a good case for either.

Of course, Lost Highway is basically a work-in-progress Van Diemen's Land.

Lost Highway is a Hank Williams cover.

I was at that LA show (2nd Coliseum show) and they came out between the BoDeans and the Pretenders. People at the show were booing because you couldn't see it was them from far back. We were on about the 35 yard line, 1/3 of the way up the bowl ($280 this go around, but I digress) and you couldn't tell it was them without binoculars, and we only had 1 set of those among the 8 of us that went.

I stand corrected. Thanks!

Still, you'd almost think Williams should have a credit on VDL. Or that his estate would sue.

really???  Maybe I am just getting too old... get off my lawn!

Wow...it's like Carrot Top meets Axl Rose.  Seeing that would almost make me nostalgic for Dashboard Confessional.

it's so bad its frightening.  How on earth did they think that was a good idea.

There is an incredible amount of 'layers' to this video. When watching this it is pretty evident U2 are comedically talented as they are musically. Maybe the Irishman An Tha can really explain what is happening in this video.

Ha!

Never seen that before but I found it amusing.....not all that era was bad then!...

Some nice irony/satire going on - a precursor to what was to follow with the 90's and u2 playing with irony/satire.

I can see why some may struggle with it though.

Oh and by way I was born 'facing the Irish sea' as the song goes but I am no Irishman!
