I chalk up a bit of nostalgia to liking this song.  As I was a teenager when I got into ATYLCB, I've got memories with it over the summer.  It's a pleasant enough song, it's just simple, inoffensive and catchy.  I know it's hated here, but I find it enjoyable.  I like the harmonies, maybe I'm a sucker for those, I dunno.

I don't think it's actually hated here...just snickered at a bit! It's a sweet song, and lots of people don't care for sweetness...I do!

So do monkeys. They steal honey from swarms of bees. Because monkeys like honey. And bees carry honey with them while swarming.

Right? This, from the guy who wrote A Sort of Homecoming, Do You Feel Loved, and So Cruel.

Also, I love Kumail Nanjiani.

As do I. Silicon Valley is such a great show.

As for Wild Honey? I don't hate it as much as I used to.

I checked the lyrics to Wild Honey now. It's kinda too simplistic for me, without really exploring those characters.

But regarding this monkey/honey thing, I do wonder where's the borderline for a tasteful metaphor. When I read those lines, I understand the idea of a young man that lives his life in an audacious manner, so Bono was clear in the portrayal of his idea. And the silly monkey/honey imagery just matches the playfulness of the melody/harmony. So I guess the goal was achieved.

So why exactly is this such BAD lyrics? I'm not a fan either, but I also don't fully get the passionate criticism.

The same guy that wrote "Helter Skelter" and "Hey Jude" wrote "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," "I Will," and "Rocky Raccoon."  What's your point?

My point is that Bono's lyrics were generally really good in the '80s and '90s, and seemed to take a serious nosedive on ATYCLB. I mean, go read the words to Peace on Earth:

Where I grew up there weren't many trees,
Where there was we'd tear them down and use them on our enemies.

The grammar isn't even right, FFS!

Not that it's truly a "rock" song, but are we now checking grammar in rock music? FFS indeed.

Wow, that is some next level nit picking. Here I was thinking the people who lost it at "ATM machine" were being harsh...

But, to be fair to '00s Bono, it was the Bono of the '80s and '90s that got the time of MLK's death wrong and thought that "somedays you can't stand the sight of a puppy".

But getting back to your example, I think POE is a beautiful song of anger and ache, of longing and doubt--the tiniest nit I've ever seen picked in a rock song, notwithstanding. (Does "She ain't never coming back" in "Brand New Cadillac" make you want to kill yourself?)  I'm truly surprised that POE gets the hate it does. And I've always liked that line, for what it's worth. It speaks of our willingness to destroy beauty/use up what little resources we have for the purpose of destroying each other. Instead of being peace makers and stewards, we seem dead set on burning this place to the ground.

And while there are a few places on HTDAAB and NLOTH where I wish the lyrics had been given another pass (I could say the same about Pop), I still think that Bono's lyrics are generally really good, especially on ATYCLB and SOI. I'm sorry that his songwriting doesn't do it for you anymore. It still does for me.

Anyway, your previous posts seemed to suggest (to me, at least) that Bono, having written those weightier songs, was committing some kind of artistic treason by writing a playful, lighthearted love song like "Wild Honey" -- that "serious artists" should only write "serious songs". I don't agree with that line of thought at all and was pointing out that that's holding U2/Bono to a standard that not even The Beatles are held to, which seems unfair. And, as has been noted before, WH serves as a bit of light before the darkness of the songs that immediately follow and showcases a side of the band that we don't get to see that often. I think it serves that function well. I like it. Would listen again.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go ahead and get off your lawn.  :P

Ah, this is terrible...picking on a poor, little, defenseless (albeit pretty mung) song. And, hey, it got selected to be in a movie trailer, so how bad can it be, right? lol

Fun fact is that "Wild Honey" is in the top 10 most played U2 songs on the radio here in Denmark. It beats songs like Streets, Mysterious Ways, Walk On and Stuck in a Moment  ;D

I dont understand the resentful towards that Miami lyric... it fits the song very well in terms of theme.

Sure, I'll give you Some Days Are Better Than Others. Look at the majority of U2's output after Pop, though:

All Because of You
I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
Stand Up Comedy
Get On Your Boots
Unknown Caller
Wild Honey
Peace On Earth
Beautiful Day
Vertigo
Miracle Drug
Crums From Your Table
Yahweh
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
Original of the Species
When I Look At the World
Song For Someone
California (There is No End to Love)
The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)
Iris (Hold Me Close)
